How much do gig work jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 8, 2026, the average hourly pay for gig work in the United States is $63.20, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $55.29 and $73.80 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is gig work?

Gig work refers to short-term, flexible jobs where individuals are typically hired to complete specific tasks or projects, rather than being employed in a traditional full-time role. This type of work is often facilitated by online platforms or apps, such as those for ride-sharing, food delivery, freelance writing, or graphic design. Gig workers are usually considered independent contractors and have more control over their schedules, but they may not receive benefits like health insurance or paid time off. Gig work can provide flexibility and variety, but it also comes with income instability and less job security.

What is the difference between Gig Work vs Freelance Work?

AspectGig WorkFreelance Work
CredentialsMinimal; varies by gigOften requires specific skills or certifications
Work EnvironmentShort-term, task-basedProject-based, independent
Employer/Industry UsagePlatforms like Uber, TaskRabbitClients across industries, personal branding
Search & Comparison IntentLooking for quick, on-demand tasksSeeking flexible, skill-based projects

Gig work involves short-term, task-based jobs often facilitated through online platforms, with minimal credentials required. Freelance work typically involves longer-term projects requiring specific skills or certifications, with freelancers working independently for various clients. While both offer flexibility, gig work is more about immediate, on-demand tasks, whereas freelance work emphasizes skill-based, project-oriented assignments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Gig Worker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Gig Worker, you need strong time management, self-motivation, and the ability to quickly learn new tasks, though formal qualifications vary depending on the gig. Familiarity with digital platforms or apps such as Uber, DoorDash, Upwork, or TaskRabbit is essential, with some gigs requiring background checks or relevant licenses. Excellent communication, adaptability, and customer service skills help gig workers stand out in a competitive and dynamic environment. These skills and qualities are crucial for securing consistent work, maintaining good ratings, and building a reliable reputation across platforms.

What are some common challenges gig workers face when managing multiple clients or projects simultaneously?

Gig workers often juggle assignments from several clients, which can lead to scheduling conflicts and fluctuating workloads. Effective time management and clear communication are essential to avoid missed deadlines or misunderstandings. Additionally, gig workers need to be proactive in tracking invoices and payments, as clients may have different billing cycles and payment terms. Building strong organizational habits and using digital tools can help streamline these processes and reduce stress.

Job description

Are you a "people person" and enjoy airports?

If you have a passion for improving the customer's experience and enjoy interacting with travelers, BARE International has a fun opportunity at Newark Airport (EWR) to conduct intercept interviews of traveling passengers.

This top-of-mind feedback will allow the airport team to make important decisions that improve the passenger experience.

As part of this ongoing program, intercept interviewers - as Independent Contractors - will:

  • Engage with and interview traveling airport passengers at arrivals and departures gate areas.
  • Collect real-time survey feedback about the passenger's airport experience.
  • Use client-owned electronic devices/tablets to record passenger opinions, feedback, and data.

Project Fees

  • You'll earn $4 for each successfully completed interview with a collection goal of 25 interviews per visit- that equals $100!* *Volumes will vary based on client/project needs and available gates/passengers.
  • The client will reimburse the cost of parking or public transportation up to $25 for successfully completed shifts and as part of a successful airport badging process.
  • The evaluator can also earn a project fee to attend to the airport's mandatory information session as part of the required badging process.

Timing

  • Interviews are conducted onweekdays and weekends, at various times throughout the day, with an expected time commitment of approximately 4-5 hours on-site on a given visit date.
  • Opportunity frequency and volume may fluctuate, based on client needs.
  • BARE International will coordinate details of specific opportunities with independent contractors for mutually agreeable dates/times.

Special Requirements

  • These assignments require an active, valid airport security badge as independent contractors will need to access both pre- and post-security areas.
    • To complete the airport security badge process, BARE will provide all necessary details. The independent contractor will visit the airport to complete a background check, fingerprints, and orientation.
    • The client will reimburse the cost of parking or public transportation up to $25 as part of a successful badging process.
    • The evaluator can also earn a project fee to attend to the airport's mandatory information session as part of the badging process.
  • These assignments involve walking and standing during the time onsite at the location.
