As a geospatial intelligence analyst, your job is to support national defense operations by using visual images to gather information about geography and landscapes. Many details of this job depend on the employer and their needs, but you may perform tasks like finding alternative routes for blocked roads or searching for areas that could be used to ambush convoys. Geospatial intelligence officers often work for the military or the federal government, either as full-time employees or independent contractors. However, you may also be able to find a few private security jobs. You can do this work alone, but intelligence analysts often work with local law enforcement or other organizations to research time-sensitive questions.
| Aspect | Geospatial Intelligence Analyst | GIS Analyst |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Bachelor's in Geography, GIS, or related field; security clearance often preferred | Bachelor's in Geography, GIS, or related field; certifications like GISP beneficial |
| Work Environment | Government agencies, defense, intelligence, military | Urban planning, environmental agencies, private sector |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Primarily in defense, intelligence, national security | Public and private sectors, urban planning, environmental management |
While both roles involve geospatial data, Geospatial Intelligence Analysts focus on national security and defense applications, often requiring security clearances. GIS Analysts typically work in urban planning, environmental management, and commercial sectors, emphasizing geographic data analysis for various projects.

We are seeking an Expert GEOINT Lead Integrator to support enterprise transformation initiatives across NGA and its Mission Partners. In this highly visible technical leadership role, you will guide systems engineering and integration efforts spanning the full engineering lifecycle—from architecture and requirements development through integration, testing, and transition to operations.
As a trusted technical advisor, you will help modernize the GEOINT enterprise by leading complex integration initiatives, shaping future-state architectures, and providing strategic recommendations that influence mission capability investments. Working within NGA's Enterprise Engineering & Architecture Division, you will collaborate across multiple organizations to ensure alignment of enterprise architecture, requirements, interfaces, and mission capabilities.
This position is ideal for an experienced systems integration leader with deep knowledge of GEOINT TCPED architecture, enterprise systems engineering, and Digital Engineering/Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) practices.
What You'll Do
Enterprise Systems Integration
· Lead enterprise-wide systems integration efforts across NGA Program Executive Offices (PEOs) and Mission Partners.
· Serve as a trusted advisor to government stakeholders on integration strategy, architecture modernization, and enterprise transformation initiatives.
· Establish partnerships across organizations to drive synchronized integration planning and execution.
· Lead high-visibility integration projects from concept development through Transition to Operations (TTO).
Architecture & Engineering
· Lead architecture gap analyses and development of future-state enterprise architectures.
· Perform engineering assessments, trade studies, Analysis of Alternatives (AoAs), and Courses of Action (COAs) to support strategic investment decisions.
· Analyze enterprise baselines and ensure end-to-end traceability between requirements, architecture, interfaces, and system capabilities.
· Capture and translate mission and customer needs into technical requirements and integrated solutions.
Digital Engineering & Technical Leadership
· Drive adoption of Digital Engineering and Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) methodologies.
· Develop integrated project plans, CONOPS, target-state architectures, roadmaps, and engineering documentation.
· Lead cross-functional Integrated Project Teams supporting GEOINT modernization initiatives across Analytic, Collection Management, Data Services, Foundation GEOINT, and IT domains.
· Define and improve modern systems integration processes using Agile, Digital Engineering, AI, and industry best practices.
· Mentor engineers and integrators while identifying new opportunities to expand team capabilities and support customer mission needs.
Governance & Collaboration
· Participate in NGA governance, configuration management, and risk management activities.
· Ensure enterprise documentation remains aligned across architecture, requirements, interfaces, and engineering baselines.
· Provide technical leadership during enterprise planning, coordination, and decision-making efforts.
Location: This position is fully onsite in either Chantilly or Springfield, VA
