What does a Geospatial Engineer do?
What Is a Geospatial Engineer?
A geospatial engineer uses modern mapping technologies, such as GIS and GPS, to map, collect, and analyze geographic data. They work with mapping or visualization tools to create 2D or 3D maps of building sites, national parks, or other locations of interest. Geospatial engineers also locate archeological sites or potential sites for civil engineering projects, such as dams or bridges. To pursue a career as a geospatial engineer, you need a bachelor’s degree in engineering, geography, geographic information systems, or a related field. Other qualifications include proficiency in mapping software, strong data analysis skills, and job experience in the industry.
How does a Geospatial Engineer typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Geospatial Engineer, and why are they important?
What is the difference between Geospatial Engineer vs GIS Analyst?
| Aspect | Geospatial Engineer | GIS Analyst |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Bachelor's in Geospatial Science, GIS, or related field; certifications like GISP | Bachelor's in Geography, GIS, or related; certifications like GISP |
| Work Environment | Fieldwork, data collection, GIS software development | Data analysis, map creation, spatial data management |
| Employer & Industry | Engineering firms, government agencies, tech companies | Government agencies, urban planning, environmental organizations |
| Common Search & Comparison | Yes | Yes |
While both Geospatial Engineers and GIS Analysts work with spatial data, Geospatial Engineers focus more on developing GIS systems, managing data infrastructure, and integrating geospatial technology into engineering projects. GIS Analysts primarily analyze spatial data, create maps, and support decision-making through data visualization. Both roles require similar credentials and often collaborate, but their core responsibilities differ in scope and application.

Temporary Faculty Pool
Department of Civil Engineering
College of Engineering
The Department of Civil Engineering at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona invites applications for its Part-Time Lecturer pool in Civil Engineering for part-time teaching appointments.
About Cal Poly Pomona
Pomona is one of three polytechnic universities in the 22-campus California State University system and among 12 such institutions nationwide. Since its founding in 1938, Cal Poly Pomona students participate in an integrative experiential learning education that is inclusive, relevant, and values diverse perspectives and experiences. With a variety of degree programs in the arts, humanities, sciences, engineering, and professional disciplines, the university is well known for its learn- by-doing approach and Teacher Scholar Model.
The university is noted for its scenic and historic 1,400-acre campus, which was once the winter ranch of cereal magnate W.K. Kellogg. We acknowledge that Cal Poly Pomona resides on the territorial and homelands of the Tongva and Tataavium people who are the traditional land caretakers of Tovaangar. The university's nearly 30,000 students are taught and mentored by the campus's more than 1,400 faculty as part of 54 baccalaureate and 29 master's degree programs, 11 credential and certificate programs, and a doctorate in educational leadership.
About the College Of Engineering
The College of Engineering's mission is to prepare students for industry and advanced studies by implementing an inclusive polytechnic philosophy through collaborative teamwork, innovation, entrepreneurship, and professional integrity. The College offers 12 ABET-accredited undergraduate degrees and 7 master's degrees to over 7,100 students across seven academic departments that include: Aerospace Engineering, Chemical and Materials Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering Technology, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. The College is nationally recognized by U.S. News & World Report and currently ranks 9th among undergraduate engineering programs in non-doctorate-granting public institutions. Additionally, it houses more than 40 student clubs that offer hands-on learning opportunities and have been recognized at several national competitions. We encourage a broad range of applicants who are committed to enhancing a culturally diverse community of faculty, staff, and students dedicated to an inclusive campus environment.
About the Civil Engineering Department
The Civil Engineering Department at Cal Poly Pomona is a leader in polytechnic education. As the largest undergraduate civil engineering program in the United States, we graduate approximately 15 percent of California's new civil engineers. We offer a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSCE) and a Master of Science in Civil Engineering (MSCE). Our undergraduate program features options in General Civil, Environmental, and Geospatial Engineering, alongside a degree in Construction Engineering and Management. At the graduate level, the MSCE program offers specializations in Construction Engineering and Management, Environmental and Water Resources, Geotechnical, Structural, and Transportation Engineering.
A list of our core courses can be found at http://catalog.cpp.edu. We value faculty dedicated to inspiring students through teaching and research mentorship, and we particularly encourage applicants with a commitment to diversity in higher education.
