Job description

About Freire Schools

Established in 1999, Freire Schools (www.freireschools.org) is a network of four charter schools across Philadelphia and Delaware whose mission is to prepare students from historically underserved communities for success in college and beyond. We're distinguished by our belief in every student who walks through our doors, our strong code of conduct and commitment to peace that ensures a safe environment for all, our sense of family throughout our community, and our joyous and engaged classrooms that focus on academic achievement. As evidence of our impact, in 2023 Stanford's Center for Research on Education Outcomes ranked Freire Schools in the top 15 in the country for academic gains out of 368 charter networks nationwide.

About the team

For this High School Geometry Teacher position, you'll be working for one of our two high schools in Philadelphia. Philadelphia Magazine recently named Freire Charter High School (#18) and TECH Freire Charter High School (#26) among the top high schools in Philadelphia. While we're proud of our accomplishments, we're not bound by tradition - if something isn't working, we are permissionless in fixing it. Since Freire's founding in 1999, the network has achieved excellence for our children through a rigorous college preparatory program and a commitment to peace, within our walls and beyond.

TECH Freire Charter School (9-12): 2221 N Broad St, Philadelphia, PA 19132

Freire Charter High School (9-12): 2027 Chestnut St, Philadelphia, PA 19103

You can indicate a preference in the application, or during the hiring process we'll help determine which one is the best fit.

What you'll do

As a member of Freire's instructional team, you will implement high-quality, standards-aligned curriculum to drive rigorous instruction, critical thinking, and high achievement in your classroom, while remaining open to feedback and instructional coaching.

Responsibilities
  • Foster a classroom environment grounded in critical thinking, academic rigor, mutual respect, and high expectations for all students.
  • Implement high-quality, content-specific curriculum and design instructional materials that promote deep thinking and problem-solving.
  • Maintain consistent, proactive communication with families regarding student progress and relevant school updates.
  • Engage fully in professional development and collaborate closely with colleagues to best support student learning and growth.
  • Teachers hired at Freire Charter High School (20th & Chestnut St.) have the opportunity to be CREW Leaders and will co-lead a class focusing on SEL and community building twice a week.
Who you are

You believe all students can succeed and bring our values of equity, love, critical thinking, and diversity to life through your actions and relationships. We're looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these requirements, you are encouraged to apply.

Minimum requirements
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Valid state teaching certification, or a clear ability and commitment to obtain certification
  • Strong content-area knowledge and instructional skill
  • Positive, solution-oriented mindset with a work ethic and collaborative spirit
  • Minimum of two years of successful experience working with diverse student populations
Pay and benefits

Salaries for certified teachers entering their first year start at $60,000, with an overall salary range of $50,000–$85,000 based on experience and qualifications. Freire Schools offers a competitive compensation package, comprehensive benefits including health, dental, and vision coverage, a 403(b) retirement plan with a 5% employer contribution for Pennsylvania employees, and a strong commitment to developing all staff as professionals while working with exceptional students in Philadelphia.

Freire Schools is committed to maintaining a workplace environment that is free from all forms of discrimination and discriminatory harassment, in service of the policy goal to provide all persons equal access to all categories of employment regardless of a person's actual or perceived race, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender (including gender identity and expression), age, creed, religion, ancestry, national origin, ethnic background, marital status, pregnancy or related conditions, disability, veteran/military status, or any other category protected by state or federal law.
