Job description

POSITION SUMMARY
The Geomatics Engineer is responsible for converting engineering plans, CAD drawings, and survey data into detailed 3D models and surfaces for use in GPS machine control systems(Trimble). This role will support Civil operations teams for construction layout and machine controls. You will collaborate closely with surveyors, project managers, engineers, other McCarthy services and Self perform operations teams to prepare, validate, and execute office/model to field efforts.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Geomatics Engineer is responsible for providing office support for the execution of all field survey related activities on assigned projects including but not limited to construction layout (staking), as-built documentation and creation of machine control files. Other responsibilities include:
• Collect, review, and interpret project data from sources such as CAD files (AutoCAD, Civil 3D), plan sheets, survey points, PDFs, and BIM models.
• Build, edit, and optimize 3D site surface models, including finished grade surfaces, existing ground, subgrades, corridors, and volumes for machine control.
• Convert 2D/3D designs into machine-readable formats (e.g., .svd, .ttm, .dxf, LandXML, or manufacturer-specific files for Trimble, Topcon, Leica, Caterpillar, etc.).
• Validate models for accuracy by checking elevations, slopes, alignments, and design intent; resolve discrepancies with design teams.
• Perform quality control checks on data to ensure compliance with project specifications and machine control requirements.
• Support field teams by uploading models to machines, assisting with initial setup, and troubleshooting data-related issues on-site or remotely.
• Maintain organized project data libraries and version control for models and revisions.
• Collaborate with surveyors to integrate control points, benchmarks, and as-built data into machine control files.
• Generate reports on cut/fill volumes, model accuracy, or progress as needed.
• Stay current with machine control software updates and best practices for data preparation.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • 2+ Years of Geodetic Survey experience
  • Proficient in Civil 3D and Trimble Business Center
  • Strong ability to Communicate and Integrate with Project Teams
  • Developmentally minded and focused on continuous improvement.
  • Knowledgeable in aspects of Design and Construction
