Job description


We are particularly looking for a motivated, energetic, flexible, organized, and independent individual. Key activities will include CRISPR-based genetic engineering and culturing of adherent mammalian cell lines, biochemical purification and characterization of EVs, mouse tissue harvesting and processing, Western blotting and other experimental techniques in support of ongoing research projects. The successful applicant will have demonstrated proficiency with adherent cell culture. Experience with biochemical isolation and purification is preferred. The Research Technician will also work alongside other research staff in the laboratory to facilitate ordering, equipment maintenance and training, and laboratory organization. This is a full-time, hourly position. Very limited weekend hours may be required on occasion. The applicant will report directly to Dr. Alissa Weaver and will work closely with senior members of the laboratory.
The Research Technician will be part of the Weaver laboratory in the Cell and Developmental Biology Department at Vanderbilt University. This Research Technician is responsible for extracellular vesicle (EV) purifications and quality control analysis, development of new cell lines for cancer-related EV studies, and sample processing for downstream analyses (imaging, proteomics, lipidomics, RNA sequencing). Much of the work relates to a project on how RNA is trafficked into EVs and how those RNA-containing EVs drive colon cancer aggressiveness.
Key Functions and Expected Performance:
  • Extracellular Vesicle purification and analysis
  • Adherent Cell Culture
  • Genetic engineering of cell lines
  • Carrying out experiments under supervision
  • Proactively troubleshooting and seeking out advice/feedback
  • Maintaining accurate experimental records
  • Meeting at least once a week with Dr. Weaver and/or laboratory subgroups to present data and report on the week's activities
  • Maintaining equipment and reagent stocks
  • Organizing laboratory protocols in shared online databases

Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, or a related field of study from an accredited institution of higher education is required.
  • Experience performing adherent mammalian cell culture is required.
  • Experience performing biochemical purification is preferred.
  • At least one consecutive year of related lab experience is preferred, either in undergraduate research or in a post-graduate technical position.
  • Strong organizational, oral, and written communication skills are required.

Supervisory Relationships:
This position does not have supervisory responsibility; this position reports administratively and functionally to the Principal Investigator of the laboratory, Dr. Alissa Weaver.
