Job description

TEAM UP WITH US!

Generator Tech is responsible for electrical and mechanical assembly, troubleshooting, and testing of generator systems and components. Skilled in wiring, diagnostics, and interpreting schematics, with responsibility for ensuring quality, accurate documentation, and reliable system performance. Collaborate with teams to resolve issues, improve processes, and support efficient operations.

DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES?

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Remove and install parts, disassemble and assemble components, clean and inspect assemblies with minimal supervision.
  • Understand and apply Cat reusability guidelines.
  • Submit parts and core returns in a timely manner with appropriate documentation.
  • Perform warranty downloads of ECM.
  • Test and verify correct operation of all repairs and adjustments.
  • Apply general failure analysis and procedures to determine proper diagnosis.
  • Complete related paperwork and access databases required to complete job (work order, parts order, JSA, DBS, SIMS, SIS web, STW) accurately and timely.
  • Work the assembly process independently. Assembly tasks include but are not limited to; attaching equipment, aligning components such as engine generators and radiators, testing assembled components, and wiring/ cabling / sealing as needed.
  • Work on a variety of assemblies including but not limited to; basic hydraulic, pneumatic pipes (both screw pipe and weldments), water pipes (both screw pipe and weldments), stainless-steel tubing, and conduits assembly.
  • Assist other Technicians with welding fit up, electrical work, painting, and other tasks as needed.
  • Document all repairs, testing, and assembly upon completion.
  • Maintain overall knowledge of the project at hand, anticipate obstacles, and advice management on downtime reduction strategies.
  • Independently wire for batteries, alternators, lights, and engine control systems (12 and 24 volts)
  • Assemble harnesses, install sensors, connect gen sets to the load bank.
  • Decipher electrical schematics to identify improvement areas as needed, troubleshoot problems and make suggestions for product/process improvements.
  • Flash engine ECM’s using CAT ET software.
  • Load bank test gen sets and perform vibration analysis on gen sets.
  • Offer direction and guidance to team members in regards to the installation of electrical components.
  • Collaborate with internal engineering team to resolve design issues and operational malfunctions.
  • Occasionally assist customers with troubleshooting of electrical systems.
  • Independently operate all assembly tools.
  • Operate forklifts.
  • Complete all Level I, Level II, and Level III assigned training in a timely and proficient manner.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or three to five years engine experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Electrical and mechanical tooling required.
  • Advanced knowledge of engine and generator electronic components and controls.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Successfully complete Work Steps assessment.
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos in English.\
  • Ability to write correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Basic knowledge of engine related electrical components and controls
  • Proficiency in all CAT Electronics, Switchgear, UPS’s, and Generators.
  • Specific CAT product line knowledge of natural gas engines, electrical, electronic, mechanical systems, and components to include Preventative Maintenance Services.
  • Position requires basic knowledge of gas/diesel engines and EPG systems and troubleshooting.
  • Proficient use of basic hand tools, air tools, precision measuring tools and instruments, laptops, diagnostic software and cranes and rigging equipment.
  • This position requires the ability to provide accurate quotes.
  • Attention to detail and ability to execute tasks in various forms of instruction (written, verbal, diagram).
  • Demonstrate the ability to read project drawings and follow shop orders.
