Job description

Position Summary:

The Steel Fabrication Equipment Operator/General Labor is responsible for assisting with the handling, preparation, cleaning, and movement of steel materials and fabricated components in support of shop operations. This position performs general labor duties while maintaining quality standards and adhering to all company safety requirements. The Steel Equipment Operator/General Labor works closely with fitters, welders, machine operators, and supervisors to ensure efficient production and a safe, organized work environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the loading, unloading, movement, and storage of steel materials and fabricated components.
  • Prepare materials for fabrication by cleaning, grinding, deburring, and removing slag or weld spatter.
  • Assist fitters and welders with assembly and fabrication operations as directed.
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, grinders, drills, and other equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Maintain identification markings and organize materials according to job requirements.
  • Assist with packaging, banding, and preparing completed products for shipment.
  • Use hoisting, lifting, and material handling equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Work closely with shop personnel to maintain production schedules and workflow.
  • Follow all safety regulations and maintain a clean, organized work environment.
  • Report any equipment defects, damaged materials, deviations, or safety hazards promptly.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Shop Foreman.

Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in a fabrication, manufacturing, construction, or industrial environment is preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge of hand tools, power tools, and material handling equipment.
  • Forklift and overhead crane experience is beneficial.
  • Ability to read a tape measure accurately and follow work instructions.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.
  • Must be punctual and possess a strong work ethic.
  • Willingness to learn and develop additional fabrication skills.

Work Environment:

  • Fabrication shop.
  • Requires use of PPE and adherence to company safety guidelines.
  • Requires standing, lifting and moving steel components regularly.
  • May involve overtime, weekend work or project-specific schedules.
