What is the difference between General Physics vs Physics Teacher?
| Aspect | General Physics | Physics Teacher |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Bachelor's or Master's in Physics or related field | Bachelor's or Master's in Physics Education or related field, often with teaching certification |
| Work Environment | Research labs, universities, industry | Classrooms, schools, educational institutions |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Universities, research organizations, tech companies | Primary and secondary schools, educational institutions |
| Common Search & Comparison | Understanding physics principles, research roles | Teaching methods, curriculum development, classroom management |
While both roles involve physics knowledge, General Physics focuses on research and understanding fundamental principles, often in labs or industry. Physics Teachers apply physics knowledge to educate students, working primarily in schools. The key difference lies in their work environment and primary responsibilities, though both require strong physics credentials.

Instructional duties include teaching 12 credit hours per semester of undergraduate courses and laboratories in physics and/or engineering at the introductory and advanced levels as well as contributing to the general physics and engineering curricula. Faculty members are expected to participate in campus service activities and maintain an active program of scholarship that includes mentoring students in research projects.

- A commitment to serving a diverse student body and promoting an equitable and inclusive learning environment in the classroom is also required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Candidates from all areas of physics will be considered, but those in areas that complement the current department faculty are preferred. We are interested in candidates who will contribute to the intellectual vibrancy of our physics department through their teaching, academic and/or educational research, and service to the university and community at large, and who are committed to working effectively with a diverse student population.
To be considered an applicant, you must apply online and submit the following:
