Position Overview
The Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for the efficient and effective management of laboratory operations and personnel within an assigned laboratory area. This role oversees daily testing activities, ensures quality and compliance with regulatory standards, and supports appropriate resource utilization. In addition to supervisory responsibilities, the Supervisor performs advanced medical technology functions and serves as a technical expert in complex testing areas. This position works under the general direction of the Laboratory Director and models behavior consistent with the West Cancer Center mission and values.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate, and direct daily testing activities to ensure adequate staffing, supplies, and reagents.
  • Supervise laboratory personnel performing routine and specialized technical procedures.
  • Assist with onboarding, training, and ongoing development of laboratory staff.
  • Evaluate employee performance, ensure staff competency, and recommend personnel actions including hiring, promotions, and corrective actions.
  • Monitor productivity, manage supply ordering and equipment needs, and assist with budget oversight for the assigned laboratory area.
  • Implement and monitor quality control programs to ensure reliable testing, proper equipment function, and regulatory compliance.
  • Maintain documentation and records required for inspections and accreditation.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of new testing procedures and techniques.
  • Prepare work schedules and assign daily workloads to ensure timely test reporting.
  • Provide advanced troubleshooting, problem-solving, and technical guidance to staff.
  • Ensure inspection readiness and oversight of laboratory procedure manuals.
  • Perform the duties of a Medical Technologist III in addition to supervisory responsibilities.
  • Serve as a technical specialist and subject matter expert in complex testing areas.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Required:
    • Bachelor's degree, preferably in Medical Technology or a natural science.
    • Minimum of four (4) years of experience as a Medical Technologist.

Credential/Licensure

  • Required:
    • Current licensure in the state of Tennessee as a Laboratory Supervisor.
    • Completion of an AMA-approved Medical Technology program.
    • Registered Medical Technologist with the state of Tennessee.
    • Certification or licensure as a Special Analyst, if required for certain laboratory areas.
  • Preferred:
    • Registry as a Medical Technologist through the ASCP Board of Registry.

Skills & Abilities

  • Required:
    • Thorough knowledge of clinical laboratory procedures, practices, and regulatory standards.
    • Strong understanding of laboratory safety and infection control procedures, including handling hazardous chemicals.
    • Ability to interpret complex technical materials and reports.
    • Effective communication skills with staff, leadership, physicians, patients, and caregivers.
    • Proven ability to lead, motivate, and develop individuals and teams.
    • Ability to work independently while exercising sound judgment and initiative.
    • Strong planning, scheduling, and organizational skills.
  • Preferred:
    • Experience serving as a technical specialist in complex laboratory testing areas.
