The Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice is a proud queer feminist fund and the only philanthropic organization working exclusively to advance LBTQI human rights around the globe. We support brilliant and brave grantee partners in all regions of the world. We work for racial, economic, social, and gender justice because we all deserve to live our lives freely, without fear, and with dignity. Astraea is the first grantmaker to hundreds of organizations; Astraea plays a catalytic role for LGBTQI groups worldwide - notably those led by lesbian, bisexual, and queer women, trans, and gender- nonconforming people, intersex people, and people of color. Our grantmaking, capacity building, media and communications, and philanthropic advocacy programs support their work to build powerful justice movements.
About the role
The Associate Director of the International Fund (IF) leads aspects of the International Fund's operations and programming work. The Associate Director ensures team members work closely with grantee partners to ensure they are informing the priorities and activities of the fund. This position is responsible for the direct management of the International Fund Program Officers, collaborates with all members of the Program Team Leadership and reports directly to the Vice President of Programs.
Strategic Leadership
• Lead preparations for the international fund grantmaking cycle, including leading docket preparation for submission
• Represent Astraea at local and international activist and philanthropic spaces and donor affinity groups as appropriate to Astraea's philanthropic advocacy goals, participate in public speaking engagements, and support staff and grantee access to such spaces.
• Contribute to organizational development and institutional strengthening by initiating and participating in organization-wide processes, such as working groups and committees, through active participation on the leadership team and other cross-team decision-making spaces.
Auditsand Reports:
• Contribute to any organizational audit as required.
• Contribute to gathering information for any organizational report as required.
Compliance:
• Ensure that international fund staff members comply with and adhere to any/all Astraea
Foundation's policies and procedures.
Controls:
• Conduct Risk Assessments as required.
• Ensure adherence to all internal organizational controls as required.
Staff Management:
• Manage day-to-day operations of the International Fund's work, including successfully implementing programmatic and team processes in close collaboration with the VP of Programs and Director of Operations. These include responsibilities related to the overall operations of the fund, as well as its programmatic work.
• Supervise, staff to ensure they are meeting role and responsibilities expectations.
• Onboard new hires with the team, to acclimate them to Astraea's workplace culture, provide training of role and set expectations.
• Coach and Counsel staff professional growth and performance.
• Work closely with the VP of Programs in determining team direction, needs, and skill- building priorities.
Internal Collaboration:
• Collaborate with the communications team to build shared political analysis and knowledge that highlight the work of Astraea, IHRF and our grantees. ; in some cases author blogs and articles that communicate Astraea's goals and represent Astraea's programmatic and organizational pillars.
• Work collaboratively with the Development team to help secure and retain resources for Astraea's programs through collaboration on proposal and report development and interaction with existing and potential funders .
• Work collaboratively with the Director of Program Operations on the design of the
International Fund's learning and evaluation process.
Experience Required:
• A minimum of 2 years of grant-making experience.
• A minimum of 3 years managing people of diverse backgrounds.
• A minimum of 3 years of knowledge of social justice movements in multiple regions.
• A minimum of 3 years of experience contributing to complex budgets with multiple sources of income to multiple grantees.
Physical Demands:
• Lifting: No more than 20 lbs. and infrequently.
• Movement: Standing and sitting for long periods.
• Visual: Long periods on computer.
• Concentration: Extended periods of engagement with computer systems where concentration is key to accuracy in data entry. Intermittent periods of engagement with a telephone system to respond to inquiries where concentration is key to task performance.
• Communication: Direct and indirect communication. Written and verbal competency.
