What is a Geese Off professional?

Geese Off professionals are individuals or teams who specialize in managing and removing nuisance geese from properties such as golf courses, parks, airports, and businesses. They employ humane methods to deter geese, which may include trained dogs, visual and auditory deterrents, or habitat modification. Their goal is to prevent property damage and maintain safety while ensuring the well-being of the birds. Geese Off services are often hired by organizations facing persistent problems with geese that traditional methods have failed to resolve.

What will keep geese away?

For a job like Geese Off, using visual deterrents such as reflective objects or decoys, along with noise makers, can help keep geese away from areas. Regularly removing food sources and maintaining the environment also reduces attractants that draw geese in.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Geese Control Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Geese Control Specialist, you need knowledge of wildlife management, basic animal behavior, and typically a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with tools like remote-controlled boats, trained dogs, noise deterrents, and sometimes certifications in humane wildlife control are common. Strong observation skills, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication with property owners set top performers apart. These skills ensure humane, effective geese management while maintaining safety and client satisfaction.

What is the difference between Geese Off vs Bird Control Technician?

AspectGeese OffBird Control Technician
CredentialsTypically no formal certification requiredMay require pest control or wildlife management certifications
Work EnvironmentOutdoor areas like parks, golf courses, and airportsVaried environments including urban, industrial, and outdoor sites
Industry UsagePrimarily used in wildlife deterrence for geeseBroader bird deterrence including pigeons, seagulls, and geese
Common Search/ComparisonYesYes

Geese Off specialists focus specifically on deterring geese from outdoor areas, often using humane methods. Bird Control Technicians handle a wider range of bird species and may have certifications in pest or wildlife control. While both roles involve outdoor work and bird deterrence, Geese Off is more specialized, whereas Bird Control Technicians have broader responsibilities across various bird species.

What are some common challenges faced by Geese Off specialists when managing goose populations in public spaces?

Geese Off specialists often encounter the challenge of balancing effective goose deterrent methods with maintaining a safe, welcoming environment for people and other wildlife. Weather conditions, public perception of wildlife management, and the adaptability of geese can make the job unpredictable. Collaboration with property managers, groundskeepers, and sometimes local authorities is essential to implement humane deterrent strategies and communicate the importance of ongoing management efforts. Flexibility and strong communication skills are key to success in this role.

Job description

About Us

Flyaway Geese® is a national leader in humane goose control, using highly trained Border Collies to safely and effectively manage Canada geese on commercial properties, parks, schools, and government sites.
This is not a typical job—it’s hands-on, outdoors, and requires independence, consistency, and accountability.
Position Overview

We are seeking a highly dependable, self-motivated Wildlife Control Specialist based in the Hampton Roads, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Suffolk, Chesapeake areas. This role involves working directly with a trained Border Collie to humanely haze and relocate geese from client properties.
You will be responsible for managing daily service routes, handling a working dog, and representing our company professionally on-site.
What You’ll Do

  • Conduct daily goose management visits at assigned properties
  • Handle and work alongside a trained Border Collie
  • Use humane hazing techniques to move geese off-site
  • Vary visit times and strategies to prevent habituation
  • Document all visits with photos, notes, and reports
  • Communicate with management and occasionally with clients
  • Assist with nest monitoring and egg addling (seasonal, with permits)
What We’re Looking For

Non-Negotiables:

  • Extremely dependable – this role requires consistency every single day
  • Lives in or very near or within driving distance of Hampton Roads area.
  • Ability to house a working Border Collie (this is required)
  • Comfortable working independently with minimal supervision
  • Physically able to walk long distances in all weather conditions
  • Experience riding a paddle board or willing to learn
Preferred Background:

  • Degree or experience in Wildlife Biology, Environmental Science, Animal Science, or related field
  • Experience with dog handling, livestock, or working dogs
  • Familiarity with wildlife behavior is a strong plus
Work Environment

  • Outdoor work in all conditions (heat, cold, rain)
  • Early mornings, evenings, and occasional weekends required
  • Active, fast-paced, and physically demanding
What Makes This Different

  • Work with high-level trained Border Collies (not basic obedience dogs)
  • Be part of a specialized, growing niche industry
  • Real responsibility and autonomy—this is not a micromanaged role
  • Direct impact on solving real problems for high-end clients
Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive pay starting at $20.00 per hour
  • Performance-based growth opportunities
  • Ongoing training and support
  • Opportunity to grow within a rapidly expanding company
Important

This role is best suited for someone who:
  • Takes ownership of their work
  • Shows up every day without fail
  • Can think on their feet and adapt in the field
  • Enjoys working with dogs and being outdoors
If you’re looking for a desk job, this is not it.

  1. Your experience with animals or wildlife
  2. Your current location
