What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Gear Design position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Gear Design, you need a strong background in mechanical engineering, sound knowledge of gear theory, materials science, and CAD proficiency, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with design software like SolidWorks or CATIA, and analysis tools such as ANSYS or KISSsoft, as well as industry certifications, are commonly expected. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills are essential soft skills in this field. These qualifications are critical to ensure the development of precise, reliable, and cost-effective gear systems that meet industry standards and performance requirements.

What is a Gear Design job?

A Gear Design job involves creating and optimizing gears for mechanical systems, ensuring they meet performance, durability, and efficiency requirements. Engineers in this role use CAD software and engineering principles to design gears for applications in automotive, aerospace, industrial machinery, and more. They analyze factors like load capacity, material selection, and manufacturing processes to ensure reliable gear operation. Collaboration with manufacturing teams and testing prototypes are also key aspects of the job.

What are some of the typical challenges faced in a Gear Design role, and how are they addressed?

Gear Design professionals often deal with challenges such as optimizing gear performance while balancing constraints like weight, cost, and manufacturability. They must account for factors like material selection, load requirements, and noise reduction, all while ensuring the gears can be produced efficiently at scale. Overcoming these challenges usually involves working closely with cross-functional teams—including manufacturing, quality assurance, and R&D—to validate designs and test prototypes. Staying updated with new materials and design methodologies also helps address evolving industry needs. Successful gear designers are adaptable and proactive in researching solutions to deliver innovative and reliable components.

With our three market leading businesses, world-class operations and investments in research and development, we offer capabilities and opportunity no one else can. Together, we push the boundaries of known science and find new ways to connect and protect our world.
Pratt & Whitney is a world leader in the design, manufacture and service of aircraft engines and auxiliary power systems and has been revolutionizing modern flight for over 100 years. Join us and help shape the future of aerospace and defense.
Pratt & Whitney is seeking a Senior Design Transmissions Engineer for our Mechanical Systems, Externals, and Nacelles (MSEN) Transmissions Team. In this role, you will perform transmissions design and analysis on commercial and military engine programs, present results during reviews, and participate in multidisciplinary integrated product teams. Hardware supported includes the fan drive gear system, accessory gearboxes, compartment bevel gears, lube pumps, and supplier-designed components.
What You Will Do:
  • Perform design and analysis in support of all phases of the product life cycle, including preliminary design, detailed design, development testing and validation, certification, delivery support, and post-engine production & service support.
  • Monitor gearbox health during rig validation testing, perform test data reduction and analysis, and confirm test objectives are met.
  • Support field investigations.
  • Participate in EKS improvement/creation.
  • Use gear design and analysis tools to define gear geometry and confirm full life capability.
  • Participate as the transmissions team representative on multi-discipline teams to provide design solutions that balance customer requirements for durability, performance, cost and weight.
  • Work to advance technology and improve engineering standard work processes/methods.
  • Document design and analysis results and present conclusions to PW management and external customers.
  • Travel Requirement: 10% (Domestic, International).

What You Will Learn:
  • End-to-end engineering exposure-from initial preliminary gear design and data reduction during rig validation testing, all the way through to certification, manufacturing, and real-world field investigations.
  • Directly shape and analyze critical aerospace components across both commercial and military programs, including fan drive gear systems, accessory gearboxes, compartment bevel gears, and lube pumps.
  • Serve as the technical authority for the transmissions team on multi-disciplinary teams, balancing customer requirements (cost, weight, performance) while actively updating Pratt & Whitney's Engineering Standard Work (EKS) to advance corporate technology.

Qualifications You Must Have:
  • A Bachelor's degree in Engineering and 5 years prior relevant experience, or an Advanced Degree in a related field and 3 years prior relevant experience. Relevant experience includes direct, hands-on experience in the design, development, manufacture, production, or overhaul of gas turbine engine components.

Qualifications We Prefer:
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or actively pursuing an Advanced degree in a related field.
  • Active U.S. government-issued security clearance.
  • Demonstrated ability to seamlessly coordinate complex engineering tasks and communicate high-level technical data effectively across cross-functional teams and all levels of management.

What We Offer:
  • Eligible for Relocation.
