We are currently recruiting experienced Dental Assistants to support the Department of Veterans Affairs Orlando VA Healthcare System.
Position Summary
The Dental Assistant provides chairside clinical assistance, patient support, dental imaging, sterilization, infection control, scheduling assistance, laboratory functions, and administrative support while ensuring quality patient care and compliance with VA clinical standards.
Key Responsibilities
The Dental Assistant will:
Chairside Clinical Support
  • Prepare treatment rooms before procedures.
  • Set up and break down operatories.
  • Perform four-handed dentistry.
  • Pass instruments safely and efficiently.
  • Retract oral tissues.
  • Maintain clear operative fields.
  • Prepare dental materials according to manufacturer instructions.
  • Assist with restorative procedures.
  • Assist oral surgery procedures.
  • Assist endodontic procedures.
  • Assist periodontal procedures.
  • Assist prosthodontic procedures.
  • Assist implant placement and restoration procedures.
Dental Imaging
  • Obtain diagnostic dental radiographs.
  • Utilize radiation safety procedures.
  • Reduce retakes through proper positioning and exposure techniques.
Infection Control
  • Follow OSHA and CDC infection control standards.
  • Sterilize instruments according to VA and SPD requirements.
  • Prepare reusable medical equipment.
  • Maintain sterilization documentation.
  • Ensure operatory cleanliness.
Direct Patient Care
  • Remove sutures.
  • Remove periodontal dressings.
  • Take preliminary and diagnostic impressions.
  • Pour study models.
  • Fabricate temporary crowns.
  • Cement temporary restorations.
  • Polish teeth.
  • Place rubber dams.
  • Place matrix bands.
  • Provide post-operative patient instructions.
Dental Laboratory Duties
  • Prepare study models.
  • Pour impressions.
  • Fabricate bite rims.
  • Prepare denture trays.
  • Perform laboratory support duties as assigned.
Administrative Duties
  • Schedule patient appointments.
  • Maintain provider schedules.
  • Assist with patient charting.
  • Document treatment plans.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Complete administrative tasks assigned by Dental Service leadership.
Patient Safety
  • Monitor patient condition.
  • Obtain vital signs when required.
  • Assist during sedation procedures.
  • Follow patient identification protocols.
  • Participate in surgical time-outs.
  • Provide patient education.
Information Management
  • Protect patient information under HIPAA.
  • Utilize VA electronic health record systems.
  • Complete required documentation accurately.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must possess:
  • Graduation from a one-year CODA-accredited Dental Assistant program.
  • Minimum one (1) year of Dental Assistant experience.
  • Current Dental Radiology Certificate.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and/or CPR certification.
  • Current Tuberculosis (TB) clearance.
  • Strong English communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Preference may be given to candidates with:
  • VA or Federal healthcare experience.
  • Experience assisting oral surgery, prosthodontics, endodontics, periodontics, and implant procedures.
  • Experience using CPRS, Cerner, or other electronic dental records.
  • Advanced dental laboratory experience.
Schedule
  • Monday through Friday
  • 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM
  • Maximum 40 hours weekly
  • No overtime authorized
  • Evening, weekend, and holiday coverage may occasionally be required with advance notice.
Duty Locations
Seven (7) Dental Assistants will be assigned as follows:
  • Lake Nona (Orlando VA Medical Center): 4 positions
  • Viera VA Clinic: 1 position
  • Daytona Beach VA Clinic: 1 position
  • Lake Baldwin VA Clinic: 1 position

Travel between OVAHCS dental clinics may be required to support operational needs.
Contract Information
  • One Base Year plus four option years
  • Replacement coverage required within two hours when necessary
  • Subject to VA credentialing, security clearance, mandatory training, and health screening requirements
