What is a CNC application engineer?

CNC Application Engineers are specialists who support the use, integration, and optimization of Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines in manufacturing environments. They work closely with clients and production teams to develop machining processes, select appropriate tools, and troubleshoot technical issues. Their responsibilities often include programming CNC machines, training operators, and ensuring that equipment runs efficiently and produces high-quality parts. These engineers play a crucial role in improving productivity, reducing downtime, and implementing new manufacturing technologies.

What are some typical challenges a CNC application engineer faces when supporting customers with new machine installations?

CNC Application Engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting machine parameters to meet unique client requirements, troubleshooting programming or setup issues, and ensuring seamless integration with existing manufacturing processes. They must communicate effectively with both machine operators and engineering teams to resolve technical concerns while staying within project timelines. Flexibility and strong problem-solving skills are key, as each installation can present different hurdles depending on part complexity and customer expectations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CNC application engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CNC Application Engineer, you need expertise in CNC programming, machining processes, and a relevant engineering degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with CAD/CAM software, CNC controllers (such as Fanuc or Siemens), and industry certifications like NIMS are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and the ability to train or support customers set top performers apart. These abilities ensure precision, productivity, and successful implementation of CNC solutions in manufacturing environments.

What is the difference between Cnc Application Engineer vs Cnc Programmer?

AspectCnc Application EngineerCnc Programmer
CredentialsTypically requires engineering degree or technical certificationUsually requires technical training or certification in CNC programming
Work EnvironmentCollaborates with sales, engineering, and manufacturing teamsFocuses on writing and testing CNC code for machines
Industry UsageUsed in manufacturing, aerospace, automotive sectorsCommonly found in machine shops and production facilities

The Cnc Application Engineer primarily focuses on applying CNC technology to optimize manufacturing processes, working closely with clients and engineering teams. In contrast, the Cnc Programmer concentrates on creating and testing CNC code to operate machines. Both roles require technical skills, but the Application Engineer has a broader scope involving application and process improvement, while the Programmer specializes in coding and machine operation.

Job description

CNC Programmer

CNC Programmer
Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled CNC Programmer to create, optimize and support CNC programs for turning, milling and millturn operations across highprecision production environments. The role focuses on converting engineering drawings into efficient Gcode using CAD/CAM systems, selecting tooling and machining strategies for Miyano, Swiss and Tsugami platforms and ensuring manufactured parts meet quality standards and aerospace/industrial requirements (ISO 9001, AS9100). The CNC Programmer will collaborate with production, quality and design teams to improve cycle times, reduce scrap and support continuous process improvement.
Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, test and optimize CNC programs (Gcode) for lathes, mills, millturn and Swiss machines including multiaxis and Yaxis machining.
  • Use CAD/CAM software to generate toolpaths, create postprocessed programs and perform virtual simulation to validate programs before shop floor release.
  • Program and optimize machines commonly used in the shop (e.g., Miyano, Tsugami and Swiss platforms) and apply best practices for multiaxis machining.
  • Select appropriate tooling, toolholders and cutting parameters; create and maintain tooling libraries and offsets.
  • Prepare setup sheets, tooling lists, and documentation required for machine setup and part inspection.
  • Support machine setup and first article runs; troubleshoot machining issues and work with operators to implement fixes and process improvements.
  • Ensure all programming and documentation comply with company quality systems and standards, including ISO 9001 and AS9100 requirements where applicable.
  • Collaborate with design, engineering and quality teams to interpret GD&T, review drawings and suggest designformanufacturability improvements.
  • Maintain accurate program version control and program backups; contribute to continuous improvement initiatives to reduce cycle time and scrap.
  • Train and mentor machine operators and junior programmers on program use, best practices and shop safety.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree or technical diploma in Manufacturing Technology, Machining, Precision Machining or equivalent; or equivalent handson experience.
  • Minimum 3 years of CNC programming experience with demonstrated ability programming lathes, mills and millturn machines.
  • Handson experience with Miyano, Tsugami and Swiss style machines or similar platforms; proven experience with multiaxis and Yaxis machining.
  • Strong CAD/CAM skills (experience with common packages such as Mastercam, GibbsCAM, SolidCAM or equivalent) and proven ability to generate and postprocess programs.
  • Proficient in Gcode programming and program debugging for a variety of controllers.
  • Solid understanding of tooling selection, cutting parameters, feeds and speeds for highprecision machining.
  • Comfortable reading and interpreting engineering drawings and GD&T.
  • Familiarity with quality systems and standards, specifically ISO 9001 and AS9100; experience working in regulated or aerospace manufacturing is a plus.
  • Excellent problem solving, communication and teamwork skills; ability to prioritize and manage multiple jobs in a fastpaced production environment.
  • Preferred: certifications or formal training in CNC programming/CADCAM and documented experience implementing process improvements.
