What is the difference between Gap Year Intern vs Volunteer Coordinator?

AspectGap Year InternVolunteer Coordinator
Required CredentialsHigh school diploma or equivalent; some roles may prefer coursework in relevant fieldsExperience in volunteer management; often requires related certifications or training
Work EnvironmentInternships in organizations, nonprofits, or educational settings; often temporary and entry-levelOffice or field-based; overseeing volunteer programs and activities
Employer & Industry UsageEducational institutions, nonprofits, NGOs; used as a learning opportunity for studentsNonprofits, community organizations, charities; focuses on managing volunteer efforts

The Gap Year Intern typically gains experience through short-term, entry-level roles during a gap year, focusing on learning and skill development. In contrast, a Volunteer Coordinator manages volunteer programs, requiring more experience in organization and leadership. While both roles are common in nonprofit and educational sectors, they serve different purposes: one as a learning opportunity, the other as a managerial position.

What are Gap Year Interns?

Gap Year Interns are individuals who take a year off, typically between high school and college or during college, to gain practical work experience, volunteer, or explore career interests through internships. These positions allow students to develop professional skills, build their resumes, and gain clarity about their future academic or career paths. Gap year internships can be in various fields and often provide valuable real-world exposure before pursuing further education.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Gap Year Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Gap Year Intern, you generally need strong organizational abilities, a willingness to learn, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with productivity tools like Microsoft Office or Google Workspace, and sometimes basic data entry software, is often required. Initiative, adaptability, and effective communication are standout soft skills that help interns maximize their experience and contribute meaningfully. These skills are important because they enable interns to quickly adapt, add value to their teams, and make the most of their learning opportunities during the internship.

What types of projects or tasks can a Gap Year Intern expect to work on during their internship?

As a Gap Year Intern, you can expect to be involved in a variety of projects that help you gain practical experience and develop new skills. These may include assisting with research, supporting ongoing team initiatives, collaborating on presentations, and participating in administrative tasks. Interns often rotate between departments or projects, allowing for broad exposure and the chance to discover areas of particular interest. The work environment is typically supportive, with regular check-ins and mentorship to guide your professional development throughout the internship.

Job description

Who should apply:

Graduated students (spring graduates) interested in pursuing a career in a medical/healthcare related field are encouraged to consider this opportunity. Specifically, this is an excellent experience for students planning a career as a physical therapist, physical therapy assistant, or physical therapist technician who plan a โ€œgap yearโ€ before matriculation to professional school.

Interns will gain comprehensive education and experience in all aspects of clinical operations and workflow, not limited to patient education, rooming patients, learning billing procedures, and various other administrative responsibilities. Opportunities will also be provided to shadow procedures and receive mentoring by the Genesis Orthopedics & Sports Medicine physical therapy team. This is a full-time, one or two-year, paid position. Some part-time applicants with potential for transition to full-time may be accepted on a case-by-case basis.

We are hiring for April 2026 and onward with 12-24 month commitments.

Requirements

Please submit a resume and brief letter that highlights your qualifications and interest in the position. Remember to include any and all volunteer and prior internship experience.

About Genesis:

At Genesis, our goal is simple: free our patients to be more active, more athletic, and to move freely in their bodies โ€“ accessible to everyone, not just the select few with the right commercial insurance.

To accomplish this mission, we've reinvented the care delivery model, trying different ideas until we discovered a blueprint for delivering the high-quality care our reputation was known for, while also making the prices more ethical and affordable. We're honored to report that, after much work, 75% of our patient base is Medicaid-eligible patients, and we were recently included on the 2021 Inc. 5000 list, making us one of the fastest-growing privately held businesses in the United States. We were able to accomplish these both in tandem by combining a deep clinical expertise with a clear-eyed administrative rethink about how we deliver care โ€“ all while remaining passionate about the mission and our patients.

If youโ€™re looking for a place with a strong mission and culture, and an opportunity to serve the underserved, weโ€™d love to consider you for the team!

This role will help us develop a physical therapy practice that will serve the underserved.

We're excited to hear from you.
