What is a gaming bar?

A gaming bar is a venue that combines a traditional bar atmosphere with gaming entertainment. Patrons can enjoy a variety of video games, board games, or arcade machines while having food and drinks. These bars often host tournaments, themed nights, and social events centered around gaming culture, creating a fun and interactive environment for both casual and serious gamers. They provide an inclusive space for people to socialize, play games, and relax.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a gaming bar manager?

To thrive as a Gaming Bar Manager, you need experience in hospitality management, knowledge of food and beverage operations, and a solid understanding of gaming equipment and trends. Familiarity with POS systems, inventory management software, and basic licensing or alcohol service certifications is often required. Exceptional customer service, leadership, and conflict resolution skills set top performers apart in this role. These abilities are crucial for creating an engaging and safe environment that attracts patrons and ensures smooth, profitable operations.

What are some common challenges faced when working at a gaming bar, and how can they be managed?

Working at a gaming bar often involves balancing customer service with technical support for gaming equipment. Staff may need to quickly troubleshoot consoles, PCs, or arcade machines while ensuring guests have a positive experience. Managing high-energy crowds during tournaments or busy nights can also be challenging, requiring strong communication and multitasking skills. Teamwork is essential, as staff frequently collaborate to manage both the bar and gaming areas smoothly. Ongoing training and clear protocols help address these challenges and create a fun, safe environment for patrons.

Food Prep & Barback (Game Bar)

The Tiny Cupboard

Job description

The Tiny Cupboard is an independent comedy club, game bar, and backyard space in Brooklyn. We host everything from stand-up and interactive game shows to outdoor ping pong and movie nights. We are looking for a versatile, energetic team player to help keep our game bar running smoothly while bringing a welcoming, geek-friendly vibe to our guests.

We need a hybrid Barback and Food Prep Attendant to support our front-of-house operations and keep our patrons fed and happy. You will be the backbone of the bar during a rush and a friendly face chatting about games and nerd culture when the room is slow. If you can efficiently prep simple bar food, stock the bar, and enthusiastically talk shop about gaming with a table of guests, you are exactly who we are looking for.

What Youโ€™ll Do

  • Barbacking: Keep the bar fully stocked with ice, garnishes, glassware, and inventory. Jump in to support the bartenders and keep operations moving during peak volume hours.

  • Food Preparation: Efficiently prepare, assemble, and plate our menu of simple bar food while maintaining a meticulously clean and sanitary prep station.

  • Table Service & Guest Engagement: Run food to tables and provide light table service. When the pace slows down, engage with patrons, chat about games, and help cultivate a fun, welcoming nerd-culture atmosphere.

  • Space Maintenance: Keep the bar, dining areas, and game stations clean, organized, and ready for the next group.

Who You Are

  • The Ultimate Multitasker: You thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and can easily pivot from prepping food to clearing tables to discussing your favorite games.

  • Nerd Culture Enthusiast: You have a genuine passion for gaming and nerd culture, making it easy and natural for you to connect with our crowd.

  • Hospitality-Minded: You are approachable, friendly, and comfortable stepping out from behind the scenes to interact directly with guests.

  • Experience: Previous experience as a barback, food runner, or prep cook is a plus, but a strong work ethic and willingness to hustle are the most important requirements. (A valid New York Food Protection Certificate is a huge plus).

Compensation & Perks

  • $20/hour

  • Free entry to comedy shows & all events (plus you can host your own events).
