Job description

The Head Bartender leads the execution of Straker’s beverage program, setting the standard for hospitality, craft, and consistency behind the bar. This role combines hands-on bartending with team leadership — training and mentoring bartenders, managing bar inventory and ordering, and partnering with the Beverage Director and General Manager to develop and refine the cocktail, wine, beer, and non-alcoholic offerings. The Head Bartender serves as the primary beverage ambassador for the Straker’s brand, ensuring every guest at the bar and throughout the dining room receives a memorable experience.

The ideal candidate is a hospitality-driven leader with deep beverage expertise, strong organizational skills, and a passion for developing a high-performing bar team.

Responsibilities
  • Lead, train, and mentor bartending staff, ensuring consistent execution of recipes, standards, and presentation guidelines
  • Create and manage bar staff schedules to ensure appropriate coverage across all shifts
  • Develop, test, and update cocktail menus in collaboration with the Beverage Director
  • Manage bar inventory, ordering, and vendor relationships; conduct regular inventory counts and monitor pour costs
  • Onboard and train new bartenders, and conduct ongoing performance coaching and evaluations
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of the restaurant’s cocktail, wine, beer, and non-alcoholic beverage offerings, and ensure the team does the same
  • Guide guests through beverage selections and model thoughtful, knowledgeable recommendations for the team
  • Deliver warm, attentive, and knowledgeable hospitality to bar and dining room guests, and step in behind the bar during service as needed
  • Maintain cleanliness, organization, and readiness of all bar areas throughout service
  • Oversee bar equipment maintenance and coordinate repairs and vendor service calls
  • Ensure responsible alcohol service and compliance with all applicable regulations; serve as the team’s point person on licensing and compliance matters
  • Act as a key point of contact for guest concerns and service recovery at the bar
  • Lead pre-shift briefings and communicate menu changes, promotions, and service standards to the team
  • Partner with the Beverage Director and General Manager on cost control, purchasing decisions, and beverage program strategy
  • Communicate effectively with service, kitchen, and management teams to support smooth operations
  • Complete opening, closing, and side work responsibilities, and ensure bar staff do the same
  • Contribute to a positive, collaborative, and team-oriented work environment
Qualifications
  • 4+ years of bartending experience in a hospitality-driven restaurant, cocktail bar, or wine-focused environment, including 1+ years in a lead, shift-supervisor, or management role preferred
  • Deep knowledge of cocktails, spirits, wine, beer, and beverage service, with a passion for mentoring others
  • Proven leadership, coaching, and team management skills
  • Strong organizational skills with experience in inventory management, ordering, and cost control
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to liaise between bar staff, service teams, kitchen, and management
  • Ability to multitask, problem-solve, and remain composed under pressure in a fast-paced environment
  • Working knowledge of POS and inventory management systems
  • Current certification in responsible alcohol service (e.g., TIPS) required; ServSafe Alcohol certification a plus
  • Availability to work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 40 pounds
