The Lead Visualization Engineer develops real-time 3D visualization for digital twins for Caterpillar's robotics and autonomous systems. This role combines visualization, simulation, robotics, and game development expertise to create high-fidelity, interactive environments representing machines, job sites, and workflows.
The engineer will leverage NVIDIA Omniverse, modern C++/Python, and game engine principles to integrate robotic behaviors, autonomy systems, and sensor data into immersive visualization platforms. This is a hands-on leadership role driving architecture, execution, and mentoring.
What You Will Do:
Real-Time Rendering & Visualization: Build high-performance real-time rendering systems for digital twins using Omniverse. Create visually accurate representations of machines, robotics systems, and job site environments.
Game Engine Development for Simulation: Develop interactive 3D environments using game engine systems (physics, animation, scene management). Develop interactive 3D environments using game engine systems (physics, animation, scene management)
Robotics & Simulation Integration: Integrate robotics simulation outputs (motion, autonomy, sensor data) into the rendering pipeline. Visualize perception data (LiDAR, cameras, etc.) in sync with simulation state.
Performance Optimization: Optimize rendering for large-scale environments, multi-robot scenarios, and sensor-heavy scenes. Implement LOD, streaming, and GPU optimization techniques for scalability
Tooling & Developer Experience: Build tools and editor extensions for scene creation, debugging, and data visualization.
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with robotics, autonomy, and simulation teams to translate data into visual systems.
Technical Leadership & Innovation: Apply game development best practices to robotics visualization architecture and systems. Evaluate and adopt new rendering, simulation, and visualization technologies.
Validation& Debugging: Develop visualization tools for simulation validation, replay, and scenario analysis. Ensure rendered output accurately reflects underlying robotics and simulation behavior.
What You Will Have:
  • Bachelor's in Computer Science, Robotics, Engineering, or related field.

  • 5+ Years experience in 3D rendering, scene building, and performance optimization.

  • Experience in simulation, robotics, visualization, or game development.

  • Strong experience with game engines (Unity/Unreal) and/or real-time rendering.

  • Expertise in NVIDIA Omniverse (USD, Kit, PhysX) or similar platforms.

  • Proficiency in C++ and Python.

  • Knowledge of robotics systems, sensor visualization, or autonomy workflows.

  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills.

Top Candidates Will Have:
  • Experience with robotics (ROS/ROS2), autonomy, or heavy equipment systems.

  • Familiarity with digital twin platforms and cloud-based simulation workflows.

  • Background in large-scale or distributed simulation system

Summary Pay Range:
$128,470.00 - $208,770.00
Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
