As of Aug 22, 2026, the average hourly pay for game writer in Michigan is $21.17, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $16.15 and $24.33 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does a game writer do?

A game writer works in either the video gaming industry, the educational gaming industry, or the board game industry. Your responsibilities in this career are to come up with the story or narrative for a game, outline different aspects of the content, such as the world, setting, and characters that the player can be, and then create a script based on that outline. These duties are similar regardless of the type of game you are writing, although, with video game and education game writing, there is generally more collaboration among a larger team of writers, as well as between the writers and other technical workers, such as animators.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a game writer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Game Writer, you need strong storytelling abilities, scriptwriting experience, and a background in creative writing, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with narrative design tools such as Twine, Ink, or game engines like Unity, as well as knowledge of branching dialogue systems, is typically required. Exceptional collaboration, adaptability, and communication skills help writers work effectively with designers, artists, and developers. These skills are crucial for creating immersive, engaging narratives that enhance player experience and align with the game's vision.

How do game writers typically collaborate with other members of the development team during the production process?

Game Writers work closely with designers, artists, and developers to ensure the narrative seamlessly integrates with gameplay and visual elements. They often participate in brainstorming sessions, provide narrative feedback on game mechanics, and revise scripts based on technical or artistic constraints. Effective collaboration requires strong communication skills and flexibility, as writers must frequently adapt their stories to fit changing project goals and feedback from other departments.

What is the difference between Game Writer vs Narrative Designer?

AspectGame WriterNarrative Designer
Primary RoleCreates dialogue, storylines, and scripts for gamesDesigns overall story structure, narrative flow, and player experience
Skills & CredentialsWriting, storytelling, scripting, often with coding knowledgeStorytelling, game design, scripting, and narrative integration
Work EnvironmentCollaborates with writers, designers, and developersWorks closely with design and development teams to shape story arcs
Industry UsageCommon in game studios, especially for story-heavy titlesUsed in game design teams focusing on narrative experience

While both roles focus on storytelling, a Game Writer primarily crafts dialogue and scripts, whereas a Narrative Designer shapes the overall story structure and player experience. The roles often overlap but differ in scope and focus within the game development process.

How much do game writers get paid?

Game writers typically earn between $40,000 and $80,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and the complexity of projects. Entry-level writers may start lower, while experienced professionals or those working on AAA titles can earn higher salaries, often supplemented with benefits and bonuses.

What companies hire game writers?

Game writers are employed by a variety of companies in the gaming industry, including major game development studios, publishers, and independent game companies. Notable employers include companies like Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, Blizzard Entertainment, Sony Interactive Entertainment, and smaller indie studios. These roles often require strong storytelling skills, knowledge of game design, and proficiency with scripting tools or writing software.
