What is a game tool designer?

Game Tool Designers are professionals who create and maintain software tools that assist game developers in building, editing, and optimizing video games. They work closely with artists, programmers, and designers to streamline workflows and improve efficiency in the game development process. Their tools can range from level editors to asset management systems, and they play a crucial role in ensuring that the development team can work faster and with fewer technical hurdles.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a game tool designer?

To thrive as a Game Tool Designer, you need strong programming skills (often in C++, C#, or Python), experience in software or game development, and a good understanding of game engines. Familiarity with version control systems, UI frameworks, and tools like Unity or Unreal Engine is typically required, and a degree in computer science or related fields is often preferred. Problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and clear communication are vital soft skills to effectively gather requirements and support development teams. These skills ensure that robust, user-friendly tools are created, streamlining workflows and enabling efficient game production.

How does a game tool designer typically collaborate with developers and artists during a game's production cycle?

Game Tool Designers work closely with both developers and artists to understand their workflow needs and create tools that streamline content creation. They often participate in cross-functional meetings to gather feedback, troubleshoot issues, and prioritize tool features that will have the most impact on productivity. Effective communication and a user-centric approach are essential, as the tools they build must integrate smoothly into existing pipelines and adapt to evolving project requirements. This collaboration not only improves team efficiency but also helps Game Tool Designers gain valuable insights for future tool enhancements.

Job description

About PlayStation Game Analytics

In Games and Publishing Analytics, we work with some of the most legendary studios in the world, supporting teams behind PlayStation franchises such as Uncharted, The Last of Us, Ghost of Yotei, God of War, and Helldivers 2. We provide endโ€‘toโ€‘end analytics for PlayStation Studios, helping teams understand players, evaluate game systems, and make dataโ€‘informed decisions from early development through launch.

What you will be doing

As a Senior Game Data Analyst, youโ€™ll partner with game teams and publishing stakeholders to answer complex questions about player behavior, feature performance, commercial outcomes, and longโ€‘term game health.

You will:
  • Lead analysis across player behavior, feature and content performance, monetization, and overall game health.
  • Turn ambiguous design, product, and publishing questions into clear analytical plans and recommendations.
  • Develop proxy metrics for playerโ€‘experience goals such as pacing, challenge, friction, agency, and build diversity.
  • Combine telemetry, playtests, surveys, sentiment, and product context to evaluate whether features are landing as intended.
  • Apply judgment to imperfect evidence, including small samples, preโ€‘launch tests, incomplete telemetry, noisy signals, and bias.
  • Support commercial questions around launch, acquisition, segmentation, campaigns, and franchise health.
  • Build dashboards and analytical frameworks that support consistent decisionโ€‘making.
  • Communicate insights clearly across design, product, publishing, research, engineering, data science, and leadership.
What we are looking for
  • Strong SQL skills and experience working with large behavioral datasets, especially eventโ€‘level gameplay data.
  • Strong exploratory analysis skills and the ability to turn raw gameplay data into clear insight.
  • Experience analyzing player behavior and game systems, including progression, combat, economy, difficulty, matchmaking, feature adoption, engagement, retention, or segmentation.
  • Experience partnering directly with designers, producers, product managers, researchers, engineers, or game leadership.
  • Ability to distinguish between similarโ€‘looking behavioral signals, such as challenge versus frustration, friction versus intentional difficulty, novelty versus durable engagement, or confusion versus experimentation.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain what the data supports, what remains uncertain, and what teams should do next.
  • A background in statistics, mathematics, economics, computer science, or another applied quantitative discipline.
Domain Experience
  • 4+ years of analytics experience in the games industry, ideally supporting game development, live operations, player behavior analysis, feature evaluation, or gameplay systems.
  • 2+ years of experience working on a shipped game, live service game, or game team operating through rapid development cycles such as playtests, launch, live events, or content releases.
  • Familiarity with the realities of game development, including changing priorities, incomplete information, telemetry gaps, crossโ€‘functional dependencies, and decisions that cannot wait for perfect data.
Bonus Points if You Have
  • Experience with Python, R, or statistical tooling for experimentation, causal inference, metric validation, forecasting, or behavioral modeling.
  • Experience with Looker, Power BI, MicroStrategy, Tableau, or another BI tool with a semantic layer.
  • Familiarity with Git or other reproducible analysis workflows.
  • Experience across live service or games with complex progression, economy, combat, content, or social systems.
  • Familiarity with publishing or commercial analytics, including acquisition, launch performance, campaign impact, monetization, forecasting, or franchise health.
