How much do game stores jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 12, 2026, the average hourly pay for game stores in the United States is $19.84, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $16.59 and $21.88 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What job makes $10,000 a month without a degree?

High-paying sales roles such as real estate agents or insurance brokers can earn $10,000 or more monthly without requiring a college degree, especially with experience and strong client networks. Additionally, skilled trades like commercial plumbing or electrical work, combined with self-employment or business ownership, can also reach this income level, often relying on certifications and on-the-job skills rather than formal degrees.

What are some common challenges faced by employees working in a game store, and how can they overcome them?

Employees in game stores often encounter challenges such as managing high customer expectations, staying up-to-date with the latest gaming trends, and handling busy periods during new releases or holidays. To overcome these challenges, it's important to continuously learn about new games and consoles, develop strong customer service skills, and work collaboratively with team members to ensure smooth store operations. Proactive communication and a genuine passion for gaming can also help employees connect with customers and create a positive store experience.

What are game stores?

Game stores are retail establishments that specialize in selling games and related products. These stores often carry a variety of board games, card games, tabletop role-playing games, video games, and gaming accessories. Many game stores also provide space for in-store gaming, events, and tournaments, fostering a community atmosphere for gamers. Some stores may focus exclusively on video games, while others emphasize tabletop and hobby gaming. Game store staff typically offer recommendations, host game nights, and help introduce new players to different types of games.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Game Store Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Game Store Manager, you need strong retail management skills, knowledge of gaming products, and experience in inventory and sales, often backed by a high school diploma or relevant retail experience. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, inventory management software, and basic accounting tools is typically required. Excellent customer service, leadership, and communication skills help you build a loyal customer base and effectively lead your team. These skills ensure efficient store operations, satisfied customers, and sustained business growth in a competitive retail environment.

What jobs are there in the games industry?

The games industry offers a variety of jobs including game designers, programmers, artists, animators, sound engineers, quality assurance testers, and project managers. These roles require skills in software development, graphic design, storytelling, and familiarity with game engines like Unity or Unreal Engine. Many positions also demand teamwork, creativity, and knowledge of industry tools and processes.

Why is Gen Z struggling to get jobs?

Game stores and similar retail jobs often require flexible hours, customer service skills, and sometimes prior experience, which can be challenging for Gen Z applicants due to limited work history or competition from more experienced candidates. Additionally, the rise of online entertainment has reduced foot traffic in physical stores, impacting job availability for younger workers.

What jobs pay $400 an hour?

In the context of game stores, typical roles do not pay $400 an hour. High hourly rates are usually associated with specialized freelance work, consulting, or executive-level positions in the gaming industry, which are rare and often require extensive experience, unique skills, or ownership of a business. Most retail or entry-level gaming jobs pay significantly less than this amount.

How to Get a Job in Game Stores

Jobs in game stores do not require advanced qualifications. Most companies look for a high school diploma or GED certificate with previous experience in customer service roles or a retail setting. You need to be at least eighteen years old, and you need significant knowledge of and passion for popular video games and related platforms and systems. Most employers also require a valid driver’s license, and great communication skills and a positive, helpful demeanor are a must in these roles. If you work in a leadership position, you must also be detail-oriented and capable of mentoring others to promote their professional growth and success.

Join Our Team as a Store Manager at Disc Replay!

Do you enjoy leading teams, helping others grow, having autonomy in your position, hitting metrics and sharing in the profits when you succeed? If so, you could be a great fit for our Store Manager position at Disc Replay!

At Disc Replay, we buy and sell video games, movies, electronics, and collectibles. Our customers bring us cool stuff all day long. We pay cash on the spot to buy their stuff and then we resell it to others. Disc Replay is a great environment to be in for video gamers, movie buffs, and those into pop culture.

As the Store Manager, you will oversee the everyday operations of the store and lead a team to create a fun environment for our customers. This is not a desk job. You'll be on your feet all day, every day, constantly interacting and engaging with team members and customers.

Responsibilities

  • Staff up a store of passionate team members who love our products and customer service
  • Work with owners to hit store performance metrics and share in the profits when you do
  • Foster a team culture that embraces our 6 Core Values
  • Embrace change, take risks, and try new ideas to help our store grow and evolve

Requirements

  • Prior management experience (retail preferred, but not required)
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced retail environment
  • Good with numbers. We'll teach you what our margin goals are, how to calculate cost of goods, etc. We just need you to be able to learn and retain that knowledge.
  • Able to stand for long periods of time and safely lift 50lbs without assistance

If you think that you would thrive in this type of environment, we'd love to hear from you!
