What is a game rendering engineer?

A Game Rendering Engineer is a software developer who specializes in creating and optimizing the visual aspects of video games. They focus on rendering technologies, such as graphics pipelines, shaders, lighting, and visual effects, to ensure that games look visually impressive while maintaining performance. Their work involves collaborating with artists and designers to translate visual concepts into real-time graphics. Game Rendering Engineers also troubleshoot and improve graphics performance across various hardware platforms. This role requires strong programming skills, typically in C++ and graphics APIs like DirectX or OpenGL.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a game rendering engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Game Rendering Engineer, you need strong proficiency in computer graphics, C++ programming, and a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with graphics APIs like DirectX or Vulkan, shader languages (HLSL/GLSL), and experience with modern game engines such as Unreal or Unity is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills help you work effectively with artists and other engineers. These abilities are crucial for optimizing visual performance and ensuring high-quality, immersive gaming experiences.

How does a game rendering engineer typically collaborate with artists and designers during game development?

Game Rendering Engineers work closely with artists and designers to ensure that visual features are both technically feasible and visually impressive. They often participate in cross-functional meetings to interpret artistic goals and translate them into efficient rendering algorithms and real-time effects. Communication is key, as engineers must balance performance constraints with creative ambitions, providing tools and feedback to help artists optimize assets for the game engine. This collaborative environment fosters innovation and ensures that the final product meets both aesthetic and technical standards.

What is the difference between Game Rendering Engineer vs Graphics Programmer?

AspectGame Rendering EngineerGraphics Programmer
Primary FocusDeveloping real-time rendering techniques for gamesCreating graphics algorithms and tools for rendering pipelines
Skills & CertificationsKnowledge of graphics APIs (DirectX, OpenGL), shader programming, C++Strong math background, graphics API expertise, shader development

Job description

About the Company

Founded in 2017 by Anthony and Joe Russo, AGBO is an artist‑led independent studio shaping the future of film and television. The Russo Brothers and AGBO have generated more than $7 billion at the global box office, including Avengers: Endgame. The studio’s projects include Academy Award–winning Everything Everywhere All at Once, Netflix hits The Gray Man and Extraction, and Prime Video’s visceral thriller The Bluff and the global Citadel franchise. Citadel Season 2 premieres in May 2026. AGBO is currently in production with Netflix on Tygo and Mercenary, both part of the Extraction universe, as well as with Lionsgate on John Rambo, a prequel to the iconic franchise. The studio is in post‑production on The Whisper Man, starring Robert De Niro, and Avengers: Doomsday, which will be released December 18 2026. AGBO will begin shooting Avengers: Secret Wars later this year. Both upcoming Avengers films are directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and co‑produced by AGBO and Marvel Studios.

In 2023, AGBO welcomed Donald Mustard—former Chief Creative Officer at Epic Games and co‑creator of Fortnite—as a partner. Mustard brings a bold creative vision to AGBO: to expand what storytelling can be through immersive, interconnected worlds that span across media. We’re building the future of storytelling—and we’re looking for bold, creative minds to help shape it. If you’re ready to help define what comes next, we’d love to meet you.

Position Summary

AGBO is looking for a Rendering Engineer to join the team and sit at the intersection of cinematic storytelling and real‑time technology, pushing the visual boundaries of what’s possible in interactive experiences tied to some of the most ambitious IP in entertainment. This is a rare opportunity to bring film‑quality artistry to interactive platforms, working alongside world‑class creators who demand—and reward—excellence. If you’re driven by the challenge of making real‑time graphics feel like they belong on a cinema screen, this role was built for you.

Key Responsibilities
  • Architect and own the rendering pipeline for real‑time interactive experiences, designing systems that deliver cinematic visual fidelity at performance targets across target platforms
  • Research, prototype, and implement advanced rendering techniques—including global illumination, ray tracing, physically‑based shading, post‑processing, and VFX integration—translating cutting‑edge academic and industry work into shippable features
  • Collaborate closely with Art and Technical Art teams to define material workflows, lighting standards, and asset pipelines that maximize visual quality within hardware constraints
  • Profile, debug, and optimize GPU and CPU rendering performance, identifying bottlenecks and driving solutions that maintain high frame rates without sacrificing visual quality
  • Contribute to engine‑level tooling and editor workflows, building or extending rendering tools that empower artists and designers to iterate faster and with greater creative freedom
  • Partner with cross‑functional leads in engineering, production, and creative to scope rendering features, communicate technical tradeoffs, and align on priorities across the project lifecycle
  • Stay ahead of the curve by evaluating emerging APIs, hardware capabilities (e.g., DirectX 12 Ultimate, Vulkan, Metal), and platform‑specific rendering features, advocating for their adoption where they serve project goals
  • Perform all other duties as assigned
Qualifications & Skills
  • 5‑8 years of professional experience in real‑time rendering engineering within games, interactive entertainment, or a related field, with a strong portfolio of shipped titles or interactive experiences
  • Deep expertise in graphics APIs (Vulkan, DirectX 12, Metal, or OpenGL) and a solid command of at least one major real‑time engine such as Unreal Engine 5, including experience working at the engine/renderer level
  • Proficiency in C++ and shader languages (HLSL, GLSL, or WGSL), with demonstrated ability to write high‑performance, maintainable, production‑grade rendering code
  • Proven experience with advanced rendering techniques—physically‑based rendering, deferred rendering, temporal anti‑aliasing, screen‑space effects, and/or ray tracing—and the ability to architect these systems from the ground up
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with a track record of working effectively in multidisciplinary teams and translating complex technical concepts for non‑engineering stakeholders in a fast‑moving, creative production environment
Additional Information
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.
