What is a game editor?

Game Editors are specialized software tools used by game developers and designers to create, modify, and manage different aspects of video games. They allow users to edit levels, characters, environments, and other in-game assets without needing to write code from scratch. Game editors streamline the development process, making it easier to prototype ideas, test changes, and polish the final product. Examples include Unity Editor, Unreal Engine Editor, and custom editors built for specific games.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a game editor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Game Editor, you need a solid understanding of game mechanics, narrative design, and editing principles, often backed by a degree in English, communications, or game design. Familiarity with game development engines (like Unity or Unreal), content management systems, and editing software is typically required. Strong attention to detail, creativity, and effective collaboration skills help a Game Editor stand out. These competencies ensure clear, engaging, and consistent in-game content, directly impacting the player's experience and the game's overall quality.

What is the difference between Game Editor vs Game Designer?

AspectGame EditorGame Designer
Primary RoleEditing and refining game content, scripts, and assetsConceptualizing and designing game mechanics, story, and levels
Required SkillsAttention to detail, editing, scripting, knowledge of game enginesCreativity, storytelling, level design, programming basics
Work EnvironmentGame development studios, editing suites, collaborative teamsDesign studios, creative teams, often involved in early development stages
Common UsageUsed in game localization, content refinement, and QA processesUsed in initial game concept creation and level development

While both roles are integral to game development, a Game Editor focuses on refining and editing existing game content, ensuring quality and consistency. In contrast, a Game Designer is responsible for creating the core concepts, mechanics, and overall game experience. Both roles require a strong understanding of game development tools, but their focus areas differ significantly.

How does a game editor typically collaborate with designers and developers during the game development process?

Game Editors work closely with both game designers and developers to ensure that game content is both functional and engaging. They often review scripts, dialogue, and storylines, providing feedback and making edits to maintain consistency and enhance player experience. Collaboration frequently involves attending team meetings, using project management tools, and communicating changes or suggestions promptly. This teamwork ensures that the final product aligns with the creative vision while maintaining technical feasibility.

Responsibilities
We're looking for a creative and performance-driven Video Editor who can help us elevate Triumph's advertising content across multiple platforms. In this role, you'll collaborate closely with our marketing and creative teams to produce high-impact video ads that drive engagement, conversions, and excitement for our mobile gaming app.
  • Edit and produce short-form video ads optimized for TikTok, Instagram, and Meta
  • Conceptualize and execute new creative ideas that align with Triumph's brand and growth goals
  • Highlight key app features, gameplay moments, and winning experiences in an exciting, attention-grabbing way
  • Continuously test and iterate ad variations to maximize performance metrics like CTR, installs, and deposits
  • Collaborate with marketing and data teams to analyze ad performance and implement insights into future edits
  • Maintain a fast-paced workflow while balancing creativity with data-driven decision making
  • Stay on top of creative trends in mobile gaming, user acquisition, and digital storytelling
Qualifications
  • 2+ years of experience in video editing, ideally with a focus on performance or direct-response advertising
  • Proficiency in editing tools such as Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, or Final Cut Pro
  • Strong understanding of social media ad formats and trends (especially TikTok, Instagram Reels, and Meta)

  • A passion for gaming, competition, and creating content that connects emotionally with players
  • Ability to take feedback constructively and iterate quickly based on performance data
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and comfortable in a fast-moving startup environment
Why Triumph?
  • Opportunity to build a scaling consumer mobile app that touches gaming, finance, and social (we build all of our games in house).
  • Small, high-impact engineering team that is scaling up. The core engineering team that built the platform is 5 people! Now that we're scaling rapidly, we're building a team that can expand the scope of our products and reach. This means you'll have opportunity to take leadership and grow as an engineer with the company.
  • Passionate team that is proud of our work
  • 16x year over year growth
  • Competitive salary and benefits ($400/mo lunch credit, healthcare, vision, dental, 401k, etc.)

All open roles are based out of Triumph HQ in San Francisco, CA but we are opened to remote.
