Description

The Andover Recreation Division's Kid Care Program provides a safe, fun, and engaging after-school experience for children in Kindergarten through Grade 5, including games, activities, homework support, outdoor play, and enrichment opportunities. Assistant Site Directors work closely with the Site Director to support daily program operations, guide staff, coordinate activities, maintain licensing and safety requirements, and build positive relationships with children, families, and school personnel. The Assistant Site Director helps provide continuity and leadership at the site and assumes responsibility for daily operations when the Site Director is absent.
The program operates at all five Andover elementary schools. This is an ideal opportunity for someone with experience in education, childcare, recreation, or youth programming who is ready to strengthen their leadership, staff-support, program-planning, and site-management skills.
Responsibilities
  • Assist the Site Director with the daily operation of the Kid Care program at an assigned elementary school.
  • Help maintain a safe, supportive, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate environment for children and staff.
  • Support compliance with Massachusetts childcare licensing requirements, Kid Care procedures, and applicable school policies.
  • Assist with planning and coordinating games, crafts, recreational activities, homework support, outdoor play, and enrichment opportunities.
  • Remain actively engaged in daily programming and assist with activities and staff coverage as needed.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records and headcounts and help ensure children are appropriately supervised throughout the program.
  • Support positive behavior and the implementation of established behavior plans in collaboration with the Site
  • Director, families, school personnel, and the Kid Care Director.
  • Respond to incidents and emergencies in accordance with established procedures and assist with required reports and documentation.
  • Provide day-to-day guidance and support to Group Leaders and Assistant Group Leaders under the direction of the Site Director.
  • Help assign daily staff responsibilities, communicate program plans, and maintain appropriate coverage of activities and program areas.
  • Model professional conduct, reinforce established staff expectations, and communicate staff concerns to the Site Director.
  • Assume responsibility for daily site operations and provide direction to site staff when the Site Director is absent.
  • Build and maintain positive, professional relationships with children, families, school administrators, and program staff.
  • Maintain regular communication with the Site Director regarding staffing, participant needs, family concerns, school relationships, incidents, and overall program operations.
  • Assist with curriculum plans, program and space schedules, supply lists, and other operational needs.
  • Help coordinate daily site setup, snack service, cleanup, and closing procedures.
  • Monitor program supplies and equipment and communicate purchasing or replacement needs.
  • Participate in required meetings and training and maintain all professional-development hours required by Massachusetts childcare licensing.
  • Support early-release days, school-vacation programming, family-engagement activities, and other Kid Care programs as assigned.
  • Provide support at other Kid Care sites when needed based on program and staffing needs.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Meet and maintain all applicable Massachusetts childcare licensing requirements for an Assistant Site Coordinator. Candidates must be at least 20 years old and meet at least one of the following education and experience requirements:
    • Hold a bachelor's degree in Child Development, Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Child Guidance, Human Services, Nursing, Psychology, Physical Education, Recreation, Child Psychology, the Arts, Social Work, Sociology, or Child Care and have at least six months of experience working with school-age children;
    • Hold a bachelor's degree in any field or an associate degree in one of the fields listed above and have at least nine months of experience working with school-age children; or
    • Hold a high school diploma or equivalent and have at least one year of experience working with school-age children.
  • Experience supporting staff or helping coordinate a childcare, recreation, education, camp, or youth-development program.
  • Strong organizational, communication, decision-making, and group-management skills.
  • Ability to provide clear direction, reinforce expectations, and communicate concerns appropriately.
  • Ability to develop positive relationships with children, families, school personnel, and coworkers from different backgrounds.
  • CPR and First Aid certification or the ability to obtain and maintain certification as required.
  • Ability to complete all applicable pre-employment and licensing requirements successfully.

Supplemental Information
The essential functions of this position require the ability to:
  • Remain active and move throughout the program area for extended periods.
  • Participate in and supervise indoor and outdoor activities, as appropriate.
  • Bend, reach, and move between activity areas while supervising children.
  • Occasionally lift and carry program supplies, materials, and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Observe children and respond promptly to safety concerns and emergency situations.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with children, families, and staff.
