What Does a Game Developer Intern Do?

As a game developer intern, your job is to provide temporary support for the development of video games. In this role, you may work on one or more projects, experience various aspects of being a developer, and otherwise further your learning as a student. Internships in game development almost never last for the entirety of a development project. Creating games often takes years, and interns only work for a few months at most. Some larger companies may shuffle you through games at different stages of development to help you learn more about the changes that occur during the development process. This job title refers specifically to developing video games, but it is possible to find an internship helping create board games instead.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a Game Developer Intern expect during their internship?

As a Game Developer Intern, you can expect to work on a variety of tasks ranging from coding gameplay mechanics and fixing bugs to assisting with level design and collaborating on team projects. Interns are often given the opportunity to contribute to both ongoing development tasks and specific features under the guidance of experienced developers. You'll likely work closely with artists, designers, and QA testers, gaining exposure to the full game development pipeline. The experience is designed to help you build your technical skills, understand agile workflows, and learn how to effectively communicate within a multidisciplinary team.

What does a Game Developer Intern do?

A Game Developer Intern assists in creating and testing video games under the supervision of experienced developers. Their tasks often include writing code, designing gameplay features, debugging, and collaborating with artists and designers. Interns are expected to learn industry-standard tools and development processes while contributing to real projects. This role provides valuable hands-on experience and can serve as a stepping stone to a career in game development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Game Developer Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Game Developer Intern, you need foundational knowledge in programming languages like C++ or C#, basic understanding of game design principles, and often enrollment in or completion of a relevant degree program. Familiarity with game engines such as Unity or Unreal Engine and version control systems like Git is typically expected. Creativity, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork distinguish standout interns in this role. These skills ensure interns can contribute to project development, adapt to challenges, and collaborate effectively within a dynamic game development environment.

The Integrations team serves as the crucial software bridge that fosters harmonious coexistence among game studios, game engines, audio designers, and the Wwise Sound Engine. We provide a cohesive, high-performance middleware. Challenges galore, the future holds hundreds of awesome features to develop, and as leaders in our industry, we plan for the next big thing without sitting still. You want to hone your skills in Unreal and Unity, do serious work used and celebrated by thousands of developers worldwide, while having fun? This is what we strive to offer.

What will you do?

Among the multiple tasks we have to offer, a good example is creating a Unity version of the Wwise Browser and Reconciliation helper, while keeping Unity's UX paradigms in mind. There are many more possibilities, and we might go with something more challenging or through other platforms.

The work involves, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Develop a major feature for a future version of Wwise Integrations, for Unreal, Unity, or both.

  • Help resolve issues as reported by QA and customers across the entire product.

  • Write a design document for a feature (e.g., a new debugging information view within a game engine).

  • Utilize C# and C++ skills to develop the feature.

  • Implement code using BDD paradigms, with proper unit, functional, and UI testing.

  • Provide continuous feedback on work progress.

What do you bring to the team?

  • Programming-level knowledge of Unity or Unreal.

  • Strong proficiency in C++17, C++20, and C++23 (asset).

  • Knowledge of C#.

  • Experience working in a team environment to develop a product (ex. FOSS, game jam, school project as a programmer).

  • Your unique perspective as a developer with ideas and dreams.

  • Your talent for pre-production, where you will take a big feature and plan how to develop it.

  • Your development skills, prototyping the feature and, hopefully, bringing it to a finished product.

  • Your passion for music, game audio, audio hardware, or music production.

  • Knowledge of DAWs (asset).

  • Knowledge of Git, JIRA, and Visual Studio (asset).
