Job description

The Fiber Splicer is responsible for the installation of new cable lines, both underground and on utility poles, and also performs maintenance on existing cables, including evaluation tests and repair.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prep and splice fiber optic cables, locate problem areas and perform other repairs as needed. This requires proficiency with fusion splicer and fiber test equipment.
  • Install and maintain transmission and reception equipment for FTTH network.
  • Install and maintain network systems for private lines and determine solutions for any issues preventing the service from operating normally.
  • Initiate test and turn-up procedures with System Engineers in accordance with company compliance standards.
  • Collect and interpret engineering documentation, to include schematics, fiber management systems and performance OTDR reports.
  • Support field maintenance teams, including: IT, regional engineering teams and any other department as related to fiber network.
  • Provide demand and preventive maintenance for fiber network & FTTH.
  • Maintain proper network documentation on changes and upgrades.
  • Troubleshoot MDF/headend issues with 3rd party providers.
  • Work within the engineering team to ensure all connections are within required specifications.
  • Work on an on-call schedule rotation as required.
  • Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:                                                                                                                                                             

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.  

  • High school diploma or recognized equivalent required
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills in English.
  • Must have active and clean, non-restrictive, state issued driver’s license in State where hired.
  • At least 3 years hands-on/field experience in fiber splicing, test equipment & restoration
  • Demonstrated proficiency using fusion splicing machine
  • Must understand the underlying theories and concepts of broadband communication and including fiber optics and Metro Ethernet networks
  • Ability to use advanced test equipment like OTDR’s, optical power meters and other fiber testing equipment as required
  • SCTE certification a plus
  • Ability to work days, weekends, evenings and holidays and participate with on-call rotation as needed
  • The hourly rate range for this position is $30.00 - $38.00 and hour.
