SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES
Located just outside of Seattle, WA, Lake Washington Institute of Technology (LWTech) was founded in 1949, and is the only public institute of technology in the state of Washington. LWTech offers , , and in , including STEM-focused programs in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

Lake Washington Institute of Technology is seeking qualified part time instructors. All instructor positions require two years work experience; college teaching experience and industry certifications are preferred.
Develop and teach a variety of instructional objectives and courses related to the funeral service education program at Lake Washington Institute of Technology. Evaluate and modify courses when necessary to meet the needs of the change in industry. This program leads to AAS degrees in the funeral service education program. This position reports to the Dean of Allied Health.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Plan and develop a variety of instructional objectives and experiences appropriate to the funeral service education program goals including appropriate general education requirements for degrees and certificates
  • Teach a variety of funeral service and education courses
  • Employ a variety of teaching methods to meet a wide variety of learning needs and styles
  • Develop and teach productive and constructive work habits, study skills, and core skills as identified by the college; and model the communication, computation, and human relations skills required for employment in funeral services fields
  • Develop classroom and laboratory procedures, including safety, in accordance with identified local, state, and federal policies and procedures
  • Collaborate closely with other funeral services faculty
  • Maintain appropriate records which indicate student progress and meet college grading requirements; evaluate student achievement in terms of curricular objectives as related to funeral services knowledge and practice
  • Follow disciplinary procedures, as prescribed in college policy, and deal consistently and fairly with all students
  • Participate in self-improvement activities and staff development in the assigned instructional area and technical field
  • Maintain a comprehensive knowledge of their area, including funeral services competency in areas of responsibility and current clinical competency, and relate specific applications to industry
  • Assist in developing, expanding, revising, and updating effective program materials and department goals; assist in evaluation and review program for requirements for outcomes assessments, state and related accreditations
  • Regular and satisfactory attendance and punctuality; other duties as assigned
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with students, staff, and community from diverse backgrounds, including those whose native language is not English, and a commitment to a culturally diverse work environment
  • Post the class syllabus and students' grades via the online course system (currently Canvas)

QUALIFICATIONS
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree; must complete Master's degree within five years of appointment
  • 2 years work experience as a funeral services provider
  • Demonstrated excellence in communication skills
  • Current license to practice embalming in Washington State or ability to acquire Washington State license within 6 months if licensed in another state
  • Knowledge of current funeral services practices, laws, and regulations
  • Ability to qualify for a WA state professional-technical certificate
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software applications
  • Previous experience with an online course system (e.g., Canvas, Blackboard, Sakai, Moodle)
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two years experience in funeral service education
  • Recent teaching experience using a variety of methods, including traditional classroom, didactic and/or clinical, individualized lab instruction, and collaborative group activities

Compensation
Placement on the faculty salary schedule is based on an individual assessment of education and experience. The salary for part time faculty contracts shall be based upon the number of credits assigned the faculty member, the type of class taught, and the rates contained in the part time faculty salary schedule currently in effect and labeled Appendix B.

CORRECTIONS OR EXTENDED NOTICES

A part time faculty member becomes eligible for benefits at the beginning of the second consecutive quarter of half time or more of in-class teaching at one or more Washington state institutions of higher education. Spring and fall quarters are considered consecutive quarters for benefits eligibility. Half time is determined based on each institution's definition of full time. A part time faculty member must qualify each quarter they teach to maintain eligibility. Once eligible, part time faculty will be notified of their benefit and retirement options. Sick leave accrues at 1 day (Prorated based on % of FTE) per month.
