What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Functional Tester, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Functional Tester, you need strong analytical abilities, knowledge of software development life cycles, and experience with test case design, usually supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with test management tools (such as JIRA or TestRail), automation frameworks, and ISTQB certification are often required. Attention to detail, problem-solving mindset, and effective communication are crucial soft skills that set top testers apart. These skills ensure thorough validation of software functionality, effective issue reporting, and collaboration across development teams, which are vital for delivering high-quality products.

What is the difference between Functional Testing vs Manual Testing?

AspectFunctional TestingManual Testing
PurposeVerify specific functionalities of a software application against requirementsIdentify bugs through manual execution of test cases
ScopeFocused on individual features and functionsBroader, including usability and exploratory testing
ToolsOften uses automation tools alongside manual stepsPrimarily performed manually without automation tools
Skills RequiredKnowledge of testing tools, scripting, and application logicAttention to detail, test case execution, and reporting skills

While both Functional Testing and Manual Testing involve testing software, Functional Testing specifically focuses on verifying that each feature works as intended, often using automation tools. Manual Testing encompasses a wider range of testing activities, including exploratory and usability testing, performed by testers without automation. Understanding these differences helps in selecting the appropriate testing approach for quality assurance.

What is functional testing?

Functional testing is a type of software testing that evaluates the features and functions of a software application to ensure they operate according to specified requirements. Testers focus on verifying that each function of the software works correctly by providing appropriate input and expecting the correct output. This testing is typically black-box, meaning testers don’t need to know the internal code structure. Functional testing is crucial for validating the core functionality of an application before it is released to users.

How does a Functional Tester typically interact with developers during the software development lifecycle?

Functional Testers work closely with developers throughout the software development lifecycle, particularly during sprint cycles in Agile environments. They are responsible for designing and executing test cases based on functional requirements, and when issues are identified, they communicate detailed bug reports to developers. Effective collaboration ensures that defects are understood, prioritized, and resolved efficiently. Regular meetings such as daily stand-ups and sprint reviews foster open communication and quick feedback, helping both parties align on quality goals and project timelines.

Position Description:

CGI is seeking a high‐potential Senior Functional Tester/Consultant or Test Engineer with experience testing SAP ECC or S/4HANA. The successful candidate will work closely with our clients, test engineers, functional testers, and the test lead to understand business requirements; design and present testing solutions for SAP S/4HANA; and participate in the full software lifecycle of an SAP greenfield implementation. The primary focus is on testing and validating the solution in SAP S/4HANA, Public Sector.

This role requires a broad understanding of SAP Federal Financial accounting processes and solutions, as well as experience with automated testing tools such as Tricentis ECT, UiPath, or similar, to establish a CI/CD pipeline for regression testing during initial deployment and subsequent enhancements. This project operates in a fast‐paced, dynamic environment that leverages Agile/Scrum methodology to quickly build and test solutions based on customer requirements.

This position is located in one of CGI Federal's offices in Fairfax, VA; Lebanon, VA; Lafayette, LA; or Knoxville, TN; however, a hybrid working model is acceptable. You will be required to work in a CGI Federal office two days per week.

Your future duties and responsibilities:

• Participate in Agile teams responsible for designing, building, testing, implementing, and supporting SAP Financials, Procurement, and Assets.

• Enhance the client's business functionality and overall performance while maintaining a high degree of customer satisfaction.

• Design, develop, and execute detailed test scripts to support multiple testing phases, including functional system testing, User Acceptance Testing (UAT), regression, performance, and System Integration Testing (SIT).

• Design and configure automated test scripts across all SAP modules (FI, CO, FM/GL, SD, MM, AA).

• Act as a liaison with the client for troubleshooting—investigate, analyze, and resolve software issues, and map client business requirements, processes, and objectives.

• Ensure the successful testing of SAP S/4HANA, including providing testing guidance, presentations, and instruction on SAP products to clients.

Required qualifications to be successful in this role:

• Due to government contract and/or clearance requirements, U.S. citizenship is required, as well as successful completion of a CGI background check prior to starting work. In addition, candidates must be able to obtain and maintain a DHS/CISA EOD/Public Trust clearance.

• A minimum of 6 years of ERP functional and/or testing experience, ideally supporting SAP S/4HANA implementations.

• Proficiency in analyzing business/system requirement documents and developing test artifacts, including test plans, test cases, Requirement Traceability Matrices (RTM), test strategies, and test‐results documentation.

• Adept at implementing automation with an emphasis on reuse.

• Experience using a disciplined approach to balance testing cycles, documentation reviews, and release notes.

• Experience in integration, configuration, testing, and implementation of SAP application areas such as Sales and Distribution (SD), Materials Management (MM), Financial Accounting (FI), • • • Cost Management (CO), and/or Funds Management (FM).

• Knowledge of key integration points between SAP modules.

• Excellent interpersonal skills, including teamwork and facilitation.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills and presentation abilities; capable of presenting and discussing strategies and technical information in a manner that builds rapport, persuades, and supports understanding for both technical and non‐technical audiences.

• Ability to analyze problems and provide clear recommendations.

• Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline.

Desired qualifications:

• Experience with SAP S/4HANA.

• Experience using SAP Activate methodology.

• Experience with automated testing solutions such as Tricentis ECT (including Tosca, qTest, NeoLoad) and SAP Solution Manager.

• Experience with automated testing solutions such as UiPath Test Suite/Test Manager, UiPath RPA, and UiPath Change Impact Analysis for SAP.

• Experience developing test cases and test scripts using Artificial Intelligence (AI).

• Experience with the Xray test‐management tool in Jira.
