Functional Project Manager information

What is a functional project manager?

Functional Project Managers are professionals who oversee projects within a specific business function, such as IT, finance, or human resources. They are responsible for planning, executing, and finalizing projects according to deadlines and within budget, while ensuring that the project aligns with the goals of their functional area. Unlike general project managers, they often have specialized knowledge in the area they manage, allowing them to coordinate effectively with both project teams and department stakeholders. Their role typically includes resource allocation, risk management, and communication between technical and non-technical teams.

How does a functional project manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project lifecycle?

A Functional Project Manager plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between different departments, such as IT, operations, and business units, throughout a project. They facilitate communication, align goals, and ensure that all stakeholders are informed about project progress and changes. Collaboration often involves leading regular meetings, managing expectations, and resolving conflicts to keep the project on track. This role requires balancing technical requirements with business objectives, making strong interpersonal and organizational skills essential for success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a functional project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Functional Project Manager, you need strong project management skills, business process knowledge, and usually a relevant degree or certification such as PMP or PRINCE2. Familiarity with project management software (like MS Project or Jira), workflow tools, and enterprise systems (such as SAP or Oracle) is essential. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help drive cross-functional teams and manage stakeholder expectations. These skills and qualities ensure that projects are delivered on time, within scope, and aligned with business objectives.

ABOUT THE ROLE
Our client is seeking a Project Manager to lead complex, cross-functional initiatives supporting the development and delivery of innovative SaaS products and digital platforms. This remote role (EST preferred) is ideal for a highly organized professional who excels at building processes, governance, and delivery plans in ambiguous environments. The Project Manager will collaborate closely with Product, Engineering, UX, QA, Architecture, and Operations teams to drive alignment, manage risks, and ensure successful execution of strategic projects. This role goes beyond managing schedules and tracking tasks-you will act as a key driver of project success by holding stakeholders accountable, proactively identifying risks, and connecting project execution to meaningful business outcomes. You will also contribute to the continuous improvement of project management methodologies and support organizational readiness and change management activities related to major releases and initiatives.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Lead planning and delivery of medium-to-large cross-functional projects supporting SaaS products and digital platforms
  • Partner with Product, Engineering, UX, QA, Architecture, and Operations teams to drive successful project outcomes
  • Develop and maintain project plans, roadmaps, timelines, milestones, dependencies, governance structures, and success metrics
  • Bring structure and clarity to ambiguous situations by defining processes, communication plans, project governance, and stakeholder alignment
  • Facilitate project meetings, stakeholder communications, and decision-making discussions
  • Identify, assess, and proactively manage project risks, issues, dependencies, and competing priorities
  • Drive accountability across teams and confidently navigate conversations with senior stakeholders when project goals, timelines, or priorities are at risk
  • Support Agile delivery practices, including planning, dependency management, release coordination, and continuous improvement efforts
  • Manage multiple concurrent initiatives with defined timelines and business objectives
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of project management methodologies, tools, processes, and best practices
  • Support organizational readiness and change management activities related to major releases and initiatives
WHAT YOU BRING
  • 3-7 years of Project Management or Program Management experience
  • Experience supporting software development, SaaS products, or digital product initiatives
  • Proven ability to lead complex, cross-functional projects involving business and technical teams
  • Strong foundation in project planning, scheduling, risk management, scope management, dependency management, and stakeholder communication
  • Experience working in Agile, Hybrid, and/or Waterfall delivery environments
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate ambiguity, establish structure, and independently drive projects forward with minimal oversight
  • Strong ownership mentality with a track record of proactively solving problems and driving execution
  • Ability to influence stakeholders, challenge assumptions when appropriate, and drive accountability across teams
  • Excellent communication, facilitation, relationship-building, and leadership skills
  • Comfortable partnering with technical teams while managing delivery risks and dependencies
  • Experience with Jira, Confluence, Smartsheet, or similar project collaboration tools
  • PMP, CAPM, Scrum, Agile, or related certifications
