What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a functional project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Functional Project Manager, you need strong project management skills, business process knowledge, and usually a relevant degree or certification such as PMP or PRINCE2. Familiarity with project management software (like MS Project or Jira), workflow tools, and enterprise systems (such as SAP or Oracle) is essential. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help drive cross-functional teams and manage stakeholder expectations. These skills and qualities ensure that projects are delivered on time, within scope, and aligned with business objectives.

How does a functional project manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project lifecycle?

A Functional Project Manager plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between different departments, such as IT, operations, and business units, throughout a project. They facilitate communication, align goals, and ensure that all stakeholders are informed about project progress and changes. Collaboration often involves leading regular meetings, managing expectations, and resolving conflicts to keep the project on track. This role requires balancing technical requirements with business objectives, making strong interpersonal and organizational skills essential for success.

What is a functional project manager?

Functional Project Managers are professionals who oversee projects within a specific business function, such as IT, finance, or human resources. They are responsible for planning, executing, and finalizing projects according to deadlines and within budget, while ensuring that the project aligns with the goals of their functional area. Unlike general project managers, they often have specialized knowledge in the area they manage, allowing them to coordinate effectively with both project teams and department stakeholders. Their role typically includes resource allocation, risk management, and communication between technical and non-technical teams.

AMP Robotics is seeking a Project Manager to lead the end-to-end delivery of complex recycling system projects. Reporting to the Director, Operations Fulfillment, this is a hands-on project management role with direct accountability for project scope, schedule, budget, risk, customer communication, installation, commissioning, and closeout.

The successful candidate will manage multiple concurrent project deployments while coordinating closely with Engineering, Supply Chain, Production, Operations, Operations, contractors, field installation teams, commissioning resources, and customers.

What You'll Do

  • Lead the execution of engineering, procurement, assembly, shipping, site-readiness, installation, and commissioning activities across five or more concurrent project deployments.
  • Develop, maintain, and communicate project schedules, milestones, dependencies, and overall project status.
  • Document and track decisions, risks, action items, and commitments arising from project kickoffs, design reviews, customer meetings, installation-readiness reviews, and project closeout activities.
  • Establish and maintain project budgets, forecasts, committed costs, contingency, and estimates at completion throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Prepare clear and concise project reporting that provides visibility into scope, schedule, cost, risk, and required decisions.
  • Coordinate internal and external resources to ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with contractual and customer requirements.
  • Support field installation and commissioning activities through completion, including work that may occur during evenings or weekends.
  • Proactively identify project risks, constraints, and emerging issues; develop mitigation plans and provide senior management with clear options and recommendations.
  • Collaborate with Engineering and Product teams to prioritize technical issues, field changes, and requested features through the Engineering Change Request process.
  • Manage project scope and change control, including evaluation of schedule, cost, technical, and commercial impacts.
  • Lead project recovery planning and corrective actions when performance deviates from approved expectations.
  • Facilitate after-action reviews and ensure lessons learned are incorporated into future project execution.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to reduce cost, improve quality, increase delivery predictability, and strengthen the customer experience.
  • Help establish consistent project controls, dashboards, templates, and operating practices across the Operations Fulfillment organization.

What You'll Bring

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, Industrial Engineering, Construction Management, Business, or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Eight or more years of experience managing complex industrial, manufacturing, automation, material-handling, construction, or capital-equipment projects.
  • Demonstrated experience personally managing projects from planning through installation, commissioning, customer acceptance, and closeout.
  • Experience managing multiple concurrent projects with competing priorities and shared resources.
  • Strong knowledge of project scheduling, budgeting, forecasting, risk management, change control, procurement, contractor coordination, and project reporting.
  • Experience coordinating cross-functional Engineering, Supply Chain, Production, construction, installation, and commissioning teams.
  • Experience managing contractors, suppliers, and third-party execution partners.
  • Strong customer communication, stakeholder management, negotiation, and escalation-management skills.
  • Ability to establish structure and disciplined project controls in a growing, rapidly changing organization.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to travel to customer and project sites as required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PMP or equivalent project management certification.
  • Experience delivering integrated automated equipment, recycling systems, conveyor systems, industrial controls, or material-processing equipment.
  • Experience working in a project-based manufacturing, systems-integration, EPC, or industrial-technology environment.
