What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Functional Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Functional Developer, you need expertise in functional programming languages (such as Haskell, Scala, or F#), strong problem-solving abilities, and a background in computer science or software engineering. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, continuous integration tools, and relevant frameworks or libraries is typically required. Excellent analytical thinking, collaboration, and effective communication skills help Functional Developers work efficiently within agile teams and explain complex concepts. These skills and qualities are crucial for building robust, maintainable software that leverages the strengths of functional paradigms in real-world projects.

How does a Functional Developer typically collaborate with other teams during the software development lifecycle?

Functional Developers often work closely with business analysts, project managers, and QA testers to ensure that software solutions align with business requirements. They participate in requirements-gathering sessions, provide technical input during design discussions, and frequently review code and system functionality with peers. Effective communication and documentation are key, as Functional Developers translate business needs into robust, maintainable code while also supporting integration and user acceptance testing processes. This collaborative environment helps ensure that deliverables meet both technical standards and end-user expectations.

What is a Functional Developer?

A Functional Developer is a software professional who specializes in programming using functional programming languages and paradigms, such as Haskell, Scala, F#, or Erlang. They focus on writing code that emphasizes immutability, pure functions, and stateless design, which helps reduce bugs and improve code maintainability. Functional Developers often work on complex systems that require high reliability, such as financial applications or large-scale data processing. Their expertise enables them to create efficient, scalable, and robust software solutions.

Job description

Who We Are
At Bluehost, we believe all small businesses deserve the opportunity to succeed online. Our mission is to give small businesses the confidence to think big. We're the all-in-one platform for small businesses to grow online with powerful simplicity, premium performance, smart tools and human support.
As we expand our agentic developer platform - spanning AI Agents, vibe-coded Apps, MCP-native infrastructure, and hosting built for the AI era - we're looking for a Sr. Manager, Developer Marketing to lead how we engage, activate, and grow the developer community building on Bluehost.
We are seeking a developer marketing leader who deeply understands how developers discover, evaluate, and adopt agentic platforms. In this highly visible, strategic role, you will define our developer GTM motion, build a thriving developer ecosystem, and translate complex agentic capabilities into compelling value for builders - from indie hackers and vibe coders to agencies and enterprise developers. You will operate at the intersection of Marketing, Product, Engineering, AI/Data, and Go-to-Market teams, serving as the voice of the developer both internally and externally.
What you'll do & how you'll make your mark.
Developer GTM Strategy and Positioning
  • Define and own the go-to-market strategy for Bluehost's agentic developer platform, including AI Agents, MCP-native tooling, and vibe-coded App infrastructure

  • Develop differentiated positioning and messaging that speaks to developers building and hosting autonomous, AI-powered experiences on Bluehost

  • Identify and prioritize high-impact developer segments - including SMB developers, agencies, indie hackers, and AI-native builders - and tailor GTM motions accordingly

  • Monitor the competitive developer platform landscape and continuously sharpen Bluehost's position against emerging agentic infrastructure players

Developer Community and Ecosystem
  • Build and grow a vibrant developer community around Bluehost's agentic platform through programs, forums, events, and ambassador networks

  • Design and run developer programs including early access, beta programs, hackathons, and developer advisory councils

  • Identify, recruit, and nurture developer advocates and technical champions who can authentically represent Bluehost in the broader agentic ecosystem

  • Cultivate strategic partnerships with AI tooling providers, framework communities, and developer platforms to expand Bluehost's ecosystem footprint

Technical Content and Developer Enablement
  • Own the developer content strategy - including documentation, tutorials, quickstarts, sample apps, and API references - that enables developers to build and ship faster on Bluehost

  • Partner with Engineering and Product to translate agentic capabilities (e.g., MCP integration, agent orchestration, tool-use APIs) into clear, compelling developer narratives

  • Develop technical use cases and reference architectures that showcase what's possible with Bluehost's agentic infrastructure

  • Enable Sales, Partner, and Support teams with developer-specific tools, messaging, and training to effectively communicate agentic value

Developer Launches and Adoption
  • Lead cross-functional developer launches - from private beta to GA - ensuring strong developer uptake, activation, and sustained engagement

  • Define and track developer-specific success metrics including registrations, API activations, time-to-first-call, and ecosystem contributions

  • Design onboarding experiences and activation sequences that reduce friction and accelerate the path from signup to deployed agentic app

  • Partner with Growth and Lifecycle teams to build developer acquisition and retention motions across online, community, and partner channels

Developer Events and Evangelism
  • Represent Bluehost at key developer conferences, AI summits, and agentic platform events - including speaking, sponsorships, and hands-on workshops

  • Plan and execute Bluehost-owned developer events including virtual demos, office hours, and build-alongs

  • Build Bluehost's presence and credibility in agentic developer communities including GitHub, Hugging Face, Discord, and developer-focused social channels

  • Shape external narratives around Bluehost's agentic platform vision through thought leadership, PR, and developer-first content

Who you are & what you'll need to succeed.
  • 8-10+ years of experience in developer marketing, developer relations, or technical product marketing, ideally within an AI, agentic, or developer platform company

  • Deep understanding of how developers discover, evaluate, and adopt new platforms and APIs - especially in the context of agentic and AI-native tooling

  • Technical fluency sufficient to engage credibly with developers: comfortable reading code, understanding APIs, SDKs, and MCP-style integrations, and articulating architectural trade-offs

  • Proven track record building and scaling developer communities, programs, and ecosystems from the ground up

  • Experience launching developer-facing products or platforms and driving measurable adoption, activation, and engagement

  • Strong content instincts - able to develop and oversee technical tutorials, documentation, use cases, and developer narratives that resonate with builders

  • Data-driven approach to measuring developer program effectiveness, with experience defining and tracking developer funnel KPIs

  • Exceptional cross-functional collaboration skills - comfortable partnering with Marketing, Engineering, Product, AI/Data, and GTM teams

  • Outstanding communication and storytelling skills, with the ability to speak fluently to both technical developer audiences and non-technical business stakeholders

Preferred experience
  • Hands-on experience building with agentic frameworks, LLMs, or MCP-native tooling (e.g., OpenClaw, AutoGen, Claude, OpenAI Agents SDK)

  • Background in web hosting, SMB platforms, or developer infrastructure products

  • Experience with developer-focused paid and organic acquisition channels, including GitHub, Hacker News, developer newsletters, and Discord communities

  • Familiarity with SMB and agency developer segments and their distinct needs vs. enterprise developers

  • Experience running or sponsoring hackathons, developer challenges, or community-driven build programs

  • MBA or advanced technical degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field

Why you'll love us.
  • Work-life balance. Our work is thrilling and meaningful, but we know balance is key to living well.
  • We celebrate one another's differences. We're proud of our culture of diversity and inclusion. We foster a culture of belonging. Our company and customers benefit when employees bring their authentic selves to work. We have programs that bring us together on important issues and provide learning and development opportunities for all employees. We have 20 + affinity groups where you can network and connect with employees globally.
  • We care about you. We provide excellent Health Insurance options to fit you, HSA, Medical, Dental, Vision, Matching 401K, Life/AD&D/STD/LTD, Tuition Reimbursement, Pet Insurance, Generous vacation policy, and much more!
  • Where can we take you? We're fans of helping our employees learn different aspects of the business, be challenged with new tasks, be mentored, and grow their careers. Unfold new possibilities with Bluehost #OTOD!
