Is AI replacing web devs?

AI tools are increasingly automating certain tasks in web development, such as code generation and testing, but they do not replace the need for full-time web developers. Web developers are still essential for designing, customizing, and maintaining websites, especially those requiring complex functionality and user experience considerations. Proficiency in programming languages, frameworks, and problem-solving remains crucial in the field.

Is web development still worth it in 2026?

Web development remains a valuable career in 2026, as demand for websites and web applications continues to grow across industries. Full-time web developers with skills in modern frameworks, responsive design, and cloud integration are likely to find ongoing job opportunities, especially with experience in programming languages like JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. Staying updated with emerging technologies and certifications can enhance job prospects in this evolving field.

What does a full time web developer do?

A full time web developer is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining websites and web applications. They work with programming languages such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and often back-end languages like Python, PHP, or Ruby. Their daily tasks may include developing new website features, troubleshooting issues, collaborating with designers and other developers, and ensuring websites are optimized for performance and usability. Full time web developers often stay updated with the latest web technologies and trends to deliver effective digital solutions.

What is the difference between Full Time Web Developer vs Part Time Web Developer?

Full Time Web Developers work standard hours as full-time employees, often with benefits and a consistent schedule. Part Time Web Developers work fewer hours, typically on a freelance or contract basis, offering more flexibility but less job security. Both roles require similar technical skills, but employment structure and hours differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Time Web Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Time Web Developer, you need a strong grasp of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and relevant programming languages, typically backed by a degree in computer science or equivalent experience. Familiarity with frameworks like React or Angular, version control systems like Git, and web development tools such as Visual Studio Code is essential. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating with teams and translating client requirements into functional websites. These combined skills ensure the delivery of reliable, user-friendly web solutions that meet business objectives and maintain project efficiency.

What are some common challenges faced by full-time web developers, and how can they be managed?

Full-time web developers often encounter challenges such as tight project deadlines, rapidly evolving technologies, and balancing multiple projects simultaneously. Managing these challenges typically involves strong time management skills, continuous learning to stay updated with new frameworks or languages, and effective communication with team members to clarify requirements and delegate tasks. Many teams also use agile methodologies to break down projects into manageable sprints, which helps in tracking progress and adjusting workloads as needed.

Is 40 too old to become a web developer?

Full Time Web Developers can start at any age, including 40 or older, as the profession values skills, problem-solving, and continuous learning. Many successful developers have transitioned into the field later in life by acquiring relevant coding skills, certifications, and building portfolios. Age is generally not a barrier to entering web development, which offers flexible schedules and diverse opportunities.

Is there still a demand for web developers?

Web developers are in high demand due to ongoing digital transformation, with many companies seeking skills in front-end and back-end development, as well as proficiency in languages like JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. The role remains essential for creating and maintaining websites and web applications across various industries.

Be a Part of Something that Matters
At WECC, we enhance the lives of 90 million people by identifying and mitigating risks to the bulk power system in the West. We are seeking a Senior Developer to join our WREGIS team and to help us further our mission and achieve our business goals.
WREGIS is an independent, web-based tracking system for renewable energy certificates (REC), predominantly in the West. The WREGIS team is working with a vendor to develop proprietary software to replace an existing third-party system.
In this role, you will serve as a hands-on developer who bridges business needs and software solutions, participating in work from concept through delivery. You'll support the WREGIS development team by informing technical direction, supporting a collaborative environment, and contributing to projects across the full development life cycle, by writing, clean and reliable code.
Travel for the first 12-20 months after hire is expected to be a minimum of 20%. After the first 20 months, travel will become an estimated 5-15%, though business needs may require additional travel on occasion.
You will-
  • Conduct hands-on coding.
  • Work with business and technical staff to plan, develop, document, and support custom in-house developed software.
  • Write clean, logical, high-quality code and adopt test-driven development and Agile practices.
  • Stay up to date on new technologies and approaches to software development.
  • Support projects from planning through final delivery and contribute to unit and regression testing, ensuring high-quality outcomes.
  • Follow and support company testing and development processes.
  • Work to minimize risk by identifying, communicating, and escalating issues to management.
  • Develop reusable software in a manner consistent with industry best-practice.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of cloud infrastructure (AWS/Terraform/Kubernetes) during application development and post-development.

Requirements
You will enjoy this role if you-
  • Hold a bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, or have an equivalent combination of education and work experience resulting in demonstrated ability to perform major duties.
  • Have a minimum of four years' experience working as a professional software developer.
  • Can work productively with an internal team and strategic partners.
  • Are comfortable with collaborative development practices including code review, pair programming, and knowledge sharing.
  • Understand and adhere to sound principles of cybersecurity, including protecting sensitive information, using secure passwords, and following organizational cybersecurity protocols.
  • Have experience in full stack web development with TypeScript monorepo architectures.
  • Have a track record of developing software applications and leveraging automated testing.
  • Experience with event sourcing and CQRS (Command Query Responsibility Segregation) is strongly preferred.
  • Have experience with TypeScript across the full stack (frontend and backend).
  • Have experience with React (v18+) and modern React ecosystem libraries (TanStack Query, TanStack Router, React Hook Form).
  • Have experience with NestJS or similar server-side TypeScript frameworks.
  • Have experience with PostgreSQL and an ORM (Drizzle, Prisma, or TypeORM).
  • Have experience with containerized deployments using Docker and Kubernetes (Helm charts, EKS).
  • Are familiar with AWS services (Cognito, S3, SES, RDS, Secrets Manager, ECR).
  • Have experience with CI/CD pipelines.
  • Are familiar with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform preferred).
  • Have experience with authorization frameworks (RBAC/ABAC, CASL preferred).
Our Culture and Values
  • Our people and our work matter;
  • Everyone is invited to be a leader;
  • Independence, perspective, and partnership are how we add value;
  • Intellectual curiosity, empowerment, and accountability fuel meaningful results;
  • Continuous improvement and innovation are essential; and
  • We act with intention and focused urgency in everything we do.
