As of Aug 18, 2026, the average hourly pay for full time union sheet metal in the United States is $29.23, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $24.52 and $31.01 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a full time union sheet metal worker?

Full time union sheet metal workers are skilled tradespeople who fabricate, install, and maintain metal products, often for HVAC systems, roofs, and building exteriors. They are members of a labor union, which provides collective bargaining for wages, benefits, and working conditions. Working full time means they typically have steady hours and may receive union-negotiated benefits such as health insurance, retirement plans, and job security. Their work often involves reading blueprints, measuring and cutting metal, and using specialized tools and machinery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time union sheet metal worker?

A Full Time Union Sheet Metal Worker needs strong mechanical aptitude, math skills, and the ability to read blueprints, typically supported by completion of an apprenticeship or vocational training. Proficiency in operating metal fabrication tools, welding equipment, and software like CAD is often required, along with OSHA safety certification. Attention to detail, reliability, teamwork, and problem-solving are vital soft skills that set top performers apart. These abilities ensure high-quality, safe, and efficient installation or repair of HVAC systems, ductwork, and architectural metal components in compliance with union standards.

What are some typical challenges faced by full time union sheet metal workers, and how can new hires prepare for them?

Full-time union sheet metal workers often encounter challenges such as working in varying weather conditions, adhering to strict safety protocols, and managing physically demanding tasks like lifting heavy materials or working at heights. New hires can prepare by familiarizing themselves with safety regulations, developing strong physical fitness, and cultivating attention to detail. Additionally, since union projects often involve teamwork and coordination with other trades, effective communication and collaboration skills are valuable assets for success.

The role requires strong attention to detail, working knowledge of HVAC duct fabrication and practical knowledge of applicable SMACNA standards.

Primary Responsibilities

•    Review handwritten and electronic fabrication sketches for completeness and accuracy.

•    Verify dimensions, quantities, materials, gauges, pressure classes, seams, connectors, reinforcement, liner and insulation requirements.
•    Confirm that duct construction and reinforcement comply with project specifications and applicable SMACNA requirements.
•    Identify sketches that lack sufficient information for compliant fabrication and resolve questions before release.
•    Organize fittings by project, area, floor, system, phase or fabrication batch.
•    Nest fittings to maximize material utilization and minimize waste.
•    Generate fabrication reports, worksheets, cut sheets, labels and production documentation.
•    Release fabrication batches to the appropriate shop equipment.
•    Operate and troubleshoot the coil-line-fed Lockformer Laser-Max, including routine setup, material-feed, cutting-output and production-interruption issues.

•    Coordinate fabrication priorities with project managers, foremen and shop leadership.
•    Maintain orderly electronic job files and production records.
•    Assist with FabShop databases, specifications, reports and configuration settings based on experience.

•    Practical knowledge of SMACNA HVAC duct-construction standards.
•    Ability to apply SMACNA requirements relating to duct gauge, pressure class, reinforcement, joints, seams, connectors and supports.
•    Ability to read and interpret field sketches, shop drawings, specifications and duct-fitting details.
•    Understanding of rectangular, round and specialty duct fittings, including liner, insulation and sealant requirements.
•    Strong computer, organizational and data-entry skills with a high level of accuracy.
•    Ability to manage multiple projects and changing fabrication priorities.
•    Ability to communicate effectively with field personnel, project managers and shop employees.
•    Ability to work full-time on-site at our Baltimore facility.
•    Ability to work overtime as needed to support fabrication schedules and project deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

•    Direct experience entering fittings, nesting materials and releasing batches in Trimble FabShop.
•    Experience generating labels, reports and machine-ready fabrication output.
•    Experience troubleshooting machine-output, printer or label issues.
•    Familiarity with SMACNA standards for rectangular duct, round duct, pressure classes, reinforcement and duct leakage.
•    Experience reviewing project specifications when requirements differ from standard SMACNA construction.
•    Previous experience with a commercial HVAC or sheet-metal contractor.
•    Experience maintaining FabShop specifications, databases or configuration settings.

A Successful Candidate: will understand that this position directly affects shop production, material usage and field installation. They will recognize questionable information, apply appropriate SMACNA standards, ask the right questions and prevent inaccurate or noncompliant work from reaching the shop floor. The candidate must be dependable, organized and comfortable working in a deadline-driven fabrication environment.
