Job description

Position Summary:
The Laser Operator is responsible for the setup, operation, and programming of Trumpf laser cutting equipment to produce high-quality precision components in accordance with engineering drawings, specifications, and production schedules. This role requires knowledge of Trumpf systems, strong attention to detail, and the ability to work independently on second shift in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Set up, operate, and monitor Trumpf laser cutting machines (e.g., TruLaser series) to ensure efficient production and adherence to quality standards
  • Program and edit CNC laser programs using Trumpf software (e.g., TruTops or similar CAD/CAM systems)
  • Interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and work orders to determine machine setup and cutting requirements
  • Select appropriate materials, tooling, and machine parameters for optimal cutting performance
  • Perform first-piece inspections and in-process quality checks using measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers, gauges, etc.)
  • Adjust machine settings as needed to maintain dimensional accuracy and minimize scrap
  • Troubleshoot machine issues and coordinate with maintenance when necessary
  • Load and unload raw materials and finished parts using appropriate material handling equipment
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area in accordance with 5S and safety standards
  • Accurately complete production documentation, including job travelers, inspection records, and time tracking
  • Collaborate with engineering, quality, and production teams to improve processes and resolve issues
  • Follow all company safety policies and OSHA requirements

Qualifications:
Required:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience operating Trumpf laser systems in a manufacturing environment
  • Demonstrated experience programming Trumpf lasers using TruTops or equivalent software
  • Strong ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and GD&T
  • Proficiency with precision measuring tools
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision on second shift

Preferred:
  • Technical certification in machining, manufacturing, or CNC programming
  • Experience with sheet metal fabrication processes
  • Familiarity with ERP/MRP systems
  • Forklift or overhead crane experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • In-depth understanding of laser cutting processes, materials, and machine capabilities
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Attention to detail and commitment to quality
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet production deadlines
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills
  • Basic computer proficiency

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
  • Manufacturing shop environment with exposure to noise, moving equipment, and varying temperatures
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks
  • Frequent lifting up to 30 lbs; occasional lifting greater than 30 lbs with assistance
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) required (safety glasses, steel-toe boots, etc.)

Work Schedule:
  • Second Shift (Mon - Thurs, 3:30 PM - 02:00 AM, or as agreed)
