Position Title
Head Cross Country Coach / Assistant Track & Field Coach
Job Description
Job Summary
Under general direction of the Director of Athletics and Head Track & Field Coach, the Head Cross Country/ Assistant Track & Field Coach is responsible for the management of a competitive NCAA DII cross country and track & field distance program, managed in accordance with NCAA, Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC), and Hillsdale College policies and regulations. Areas of responsibility include: management of coaching staff, recruitment of student-athletes, student-athlete development, manage budget, adherence to NCAA/GMAC legislation, and other duties as assigned. Full-time, 12-month position with College benefits package.
Essential Job Functions
  1. Plan and execute scheduling for all cross country seasons, team travel, lodging, meals, and officials as applicable.
  2. Successful recruitment of student-athletes that meet College mission and admission standards and expectations
  3. Preparation and management of cross country program operating budget
  4. Management of scholarship budget in line with Head Track & Field Coach, and communication with financial aid office for awarding and renewing athletic scholarship offers
  5. Foster a positive and competitive environment.
  6. Provide support to academics and monitor academic progress of student-athletes.
  7. Successfully host, market and executive home meets in cross country.
  8. Plan and coordinate training programs for specific distance group through the three seasons.
  9. Emphasis on NCAA compliance and continual education of legislation
  10. Plan and execute marketing and fundraising activities as applicable
  11. Attendance at staff meetings, compliance meetings and community engagement activities as needed.

Required Qualifications
Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty mentioned satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Sports Studies or related field required, Master's degree preferred.
  • Previous experience coaching track & field and competing as an athlete is required.

Other Skills
  1. Knowledge of NCAA rules & regulations.
  2. Knowledge of proper event specific techniques, training regimens, and strength training.
  3. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to express effectively ideas orally and in writing.

Physical Demands
  1. Average physical strength is required.
  2. Must be able to ambulate, step, climb, stoop, bend twist and carry heavy objects over uneven terrain.
  3. Must be able to demonstrate movements in which athletes are being trained.
  4. Must be able to hear, see, talk, read and communicate with Hillsdale College colleagues, athletes, prospective athletes, donors and other constituents orally and in writing.
  5. Must be able to safely lift up to 50 pounds of track and field equipment regularly.
  6. Frequently works in outdoor weather conditions.
