The Department of Theology & Religious Studies at Villanova University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in Eastern Christian Theology & Culture, to begin August 2027. We welcome applications from scholars trained in Theology and/or Religious Studies whose research focuses on any aspect of Eastern Christian traditions, including: Greek or Syriac Patristics, Byzantine Theology & Culture, Russian Religious Thought, Contemporary Orthodox or Eastern Catholic theology & culture. Successful candidates will have research competence in relevant languages. They will demonstrate potential for teaching and mentoring excellence at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels.
Villanova is a Catholic university sponsored by the Augustinian order. The department seeks candidates whose research and/or teaching demonstrates present or potential engagement with Catholicism in its theological and religious traditions.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Contribute to the TRS curriculum a range of courses that contribute to understand Eastern Christian Traditions.
  • Teach THL 1000 (undergraduate introductory course) and electives at the undergraduate, master's, and doctoral level. Doctoral faculty teach two courses per semester.
  • Advance a scholarly research program supported by peer reviewed publications.
  • Serve the department, college, university, and professional communities

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. or equivalent in Theology, Religious Studies, or cognate fields, with focus on Eastern Christian Theology & Culture, in hand by August 2027.
  • Competence in languages relevant for the research area.
  • Present or potential engagement with Catholicism in its theological and religious traditions.
