Summary:
POSITION SUMMARY:
Responsible for the delivery of patient care through the nursing process of assessment, diagnosing, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Responsible for directing and coordinating all nursing care for departmental specific patients based on established clinical nursing practice standards. Collaborates with interdisciplinary team to ensure effective and efficient patient care delivery and the achievement of desired patient outcomes. Supports the organization vision and mission. Utilizes knowledge of patient's age and cultural diversity into the provision of patient care. Contributes to the provision of quality nursing care through performance improvement techniques that demonstrate positive outcomes in patient care.
POSITION EDUCATION/ QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Graduate of accredited school of nursing required (BSN preferred)
    Current registered nurse's license in the State of Texas required.
    Current BLS certification required
    ACLS certification required
    2-5 years ICU clinical experience
    ECMO experience preferred
    Completion of or eligibility for national ECMO certification within 1 year of meeting required hours.
    Sensitivity to cultural and language differences
    Good written and verbal communication skills
    Ability to read, write and speak English
    Spanish proficiency preferred
    Ability to practice nursing as described by the following definition by the American Nurses Association (2016): "the essential core of practice for the registered nurse to deliver holistic, patient-focused care."     Function independently and collaboratively as an expert clinician in extracorporeal membranous oxygenation (ECMO) care
    Coordinate the care of patients requiring ECMO and their families across the continuum of acuity to ensure consistent family-centered care
    Active participation with ECMO cart and safety checks
    Specialist must attend monthly simulation lab and other educational opportunities as assigned.
    Demonstrates accurate assessment skills, appropriate to the age of the patient, based on scientific facts and principles.
    Performs initial assessment and completes required documentation within organizational standards.
    Performs and documents ongoing assessments including observation, physical examination, laboratory/test results, and patient response to procedural intervention.
    Participates in the identification and clarification of patient needs, as evidenced by participation in multidisciplinary care planning, to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
    Incorporates patient teaching/discharge planning to promote optimal patient outcomes.
    Implements physician's orders in a safe and accurate manner.
    Assists with admitting, discharging and transferring patients
    Transcribes and implements new physician orders.
    Adapts to the needs of the unit by demonstrating flexibility/adaptability.
    Maintains detailed and accurate records of nursing actions.
    Participates in health/therapeutic counseling, teaching/emotional support for patients and significant others.
    Makes rounds on assigned patients and prioritizes patient's needs.
    Maintains a safe and clean environment for patients and co-workers.
    Performs bedside shift report (hands off report)
    Administers medication and therapies within the scope of safe nursing practice.
    Formulates, modifies and implements goal oriented patient care plans according to facility policies.
    Delegates appropriate tasks to non-licensed nursing staff
    Builds a positive work environment by guiding employees to support the mission of the hospital and encouraging teamwork.
    Flexibility in schedule to meet unit needs and weekend/holiday requirements.
    Attends mandatory unit and hospital meetings/classes.
