Job description

Genetic Counselor

Solicitation 36C10X26R0053 (Genomic Care) | VHA Integrated Critical Staffing Program (ICSP)

Remote / Virtual — Serving VA Genomic Medicine Service patients (priority market: Florida)   |   Full-Time or Part-Time FTE   |   M–F, business hours local to assigned VA facility; no on-call/off-hours coverage

Position Overview

We are seeking a Board Certified Genetic Counselor to deliver 100% virtual genetic counseling services to Veterans and their families through VA's Genomic Medicine Service, administered via the Salt Lake City VAMC hub under the VA's Integrated Critical Staffing Program (ICSP). This role begins in Option Year 1 of the contract. This is a dedicated telehealth role — no in-person or on-call coverage — supporting a national Veteran patient population.

Key Responsibilities

•      Communicate with patients, referring providers, and colleagues to coordinate genetic counseling care.

•      Review medical records (in CPRS and external) and conduct literature review to identify and interpret risks of an inherited disorder.

•      Obtain personal medical, lifestyle, environmental, and family histories — including service-related exposures — to conduct risk assessment.

•      Educate patients on inheritance patterns, recurrence risks, and available prevention/screening options.

•      Identify appropriate genetic test strategies balancing patient, VA pathology, and referring-provider needs; order genetic testing.

•      Ensure test results are appropriately documented and communicated to patients and providers.

•      Counsel patients and connect them and their families to appropriate VHA resources.

•      Document all clinical activity in the electronic medical record.

•      Participate in development and dissemination of genetic counseling program and education materials.

Qualifications & Experience

•      Board Certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC); current BLS certification or equivalent.

•      Current, full and unrestricted license to practice in the state where the Veteran patient resides, where genetic counselor licensure is available; in states without GC licensure, must practice directly under a board-certified VA medical geneticist.

•      Able to obtain VA PIV credentialing/security clearance (application submitted week 1; 2–3 weeks typical adjudication).

•      Skilled in oral and written communication with a variety of audiences — patients, referring providers, and colleagues.

•      Comfortable with EHR documentation, televideo platforms, and standard Windows-based computer systems.

Compensation

Bill Rate: $74–$84/hour, depending on experience and certifications

This is a 100% remote position — no per diem or travel allowance applies.

Application Process

Interested candidates should submit a current resume/CV, proof of ABGC board certification, active state license (where applicable), and three (3) professional references. As this position supports a VA Medical Center program, a signed Letter of Intent (LOI) is required as part of submission.

We are an equal opportunity employer. We welcome applications from all qualified candidates and are committed to providing an inclusive and accessible recruitment process. Accommodations are available upon request at any stage of the hiring process.
