Duties
Help
  • Provide comprehensive genetic counseling for clients and families with suspected or confirmed genetic conditions.
  • Identify at-risk families, interpret disorders, analyze inheritance patterns, and review available options.
  • Collect comprehensive family histories and construct multi generational charts to support diagnostic evaluations.
  • Analyze genetic and clinical data to guide diagnostic testing and interpretation.
  • Provide psychosocial support and follow-up to patients adjusting to genetic diagnoses.
  • Advise and educate patients and parents through face-to-face counseling and clear explanations.
  • Support prenatal and high-risk clinics using cytogenetic and molecular diagnostic techniques.
  • Assist development of adult genetics clinics for familial cancer, cardiovascular, and neurodegenerative conditions.
  • Develop curricula and teach staff about genetic evaluation, counseling, and informed consent.
  • Participate in clinical research including protocol design, consent development, enrollment, data collection, and analysis,

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
  • Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter.
  • Inclement Weather Essential Position (the incumbent must make every attempt to report for work on time and/or remain on duty during severe weather conditions.
  • This position is designated as having regular and recurring contact with children under the age of 18 and is subject to
    requirements of DoDI 1402.05.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirement for Genetic Counselor:
Degree: Bachelor's or graduate (or higher level) degree with major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position (such as Genetic Counseling). This degree must be from an educational program accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience:
I have one year of specialized experience that is equivalent to the GS-11 or above grade level in the Federal Service which includes providing genetic counseling to patients and families; conducting consultations with patients to conduct genetic risk assessments; collaborating with health care professionals on a variety of genetic conditions.
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience aloneno substitution of education for experience is permitted.
Education
FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
