What are full time quantitative genetics jobs?

Full time quantitative genetics jobs involve applying statistical and mathematical methods to study the genetic basis of traits in plants, animals, or humans. Professionals in these roles analyze large datasets to identify genetic variations linked to specific traits, predict breeding outcomes, and improve genetic selection strategies. These positions are commonly found in academia, agriculture, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical industries. Typical responsibilities include data analysis, developing genetic models, conducting experiments, and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Time Quantitative Geneticist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Time Quantitative Geneticist, you need a solid background in genetics, statistics, and data analysis, typically supported by an advanced degree such as a PhD in genetics, animal breeding, or a related field. Familiarity with statistical software (e.g., R, SAS), genetic analysis tools (e.g., ASReml, BLUPF90), and experience with large-scale genomic datasets are essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help distinguish top performers in this field. These competencies are critical for designing and interpreting complex genetic studies that drive advancements in breeding programs and genetic research.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in full-time quantitative genetics roles?

Professionals in full-time quantitative genetics often face challenges such as managing large and complex datasets, keeping up with rapidly evolving statistical methods, and integrating diverse sources of biological data. Collaborating across multidisciplinary teams—including geneticists, statisticians, and computational biologists—is essential for success but can also require strong communication skills. Additionally, staying current with new computational tools and software is important for effective data analysis and research advancement.

What is the difference between Full Time Quantitative Genetics vs Quantitative Geneticist?

AspectFull Time Quantitative GeneticsQuantitative Geneticist
CredentialsTypically requires a PhD in genetics, biology, or related fieldsOften holds a PhD or Master's in genetics, biology, or statistics
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, universities, biotech companiesResearch institutions, agricultural companies, biotech firms
Industry UsageUsed broadly in academia and industry for research and developmentFocused on applying genetic principles to improve crops, livestock, or health

Full Time Quantitative Genetics refers to a role involving comprehensive research and analysis in genetics, often requiring advanced degrees. Quantitative Geneticist is a related position with similar credentials, primarily applying genetic models to practical problems in agriculture or health. Both roles share work environments and industry usage but differ mainly in scope and focus.

AIS is looking for a Quantitative Ecologist to support SEFSC Marine Mammal & Turtle Division (MMTD).

Primary Function:

The Quantitative Ecologist will support data management and analysis for the SEFSC Marine Mammal & Turtle Division, applying statistical models and developing simulations to address complex scientific problems. Core focus areas include animal movement and habitat ecology, spatially explicit abundance modeling, marine mammal population dynamics, and quantitative risk assessment evaluating effects of natural and man-made stressors on marine mammal populations.

Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Develop analytical approaches to address complex questions in marine mammal spatial and/or behavioral ecology related to MMTD priorities and legislative mandates (MMPA and ESA), including assessments of the impact of stressors on marine mammal populations.
  • Identify key data gaps and develop/propose approaches to improve or modify data collection efforts.
  • Participate in fieldwork on an as-needed basis, including driving government vehicles; provide advice and assistance with data collection and data management protocols.
  • Work with MMTD team members to formulate analytical solutions to marine mammal management questions that integrate existing data streams within NOAA.
  • Develop written technical reports and peer-reviewed publications documenting project findings; disseminate scientific results via presentations to diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Attend planning and coordination meetings with MMTD researchers virtually or in person.

Compensation:

Candidates will be paid an hourly rate to be negotiated, and total compensation will vary depending on candidates' depth of experience. This is a full-time position. AIS benefits package includes health and dental insurance, vacation, sick and holiday benefits.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS Degree in Marine Science or related field plus five years of relevant experience.
  • Experience with statistical analysis to investigate species-environment relationships, management of large datasets, and visualization of model outputs including species distribution maps.
