Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The NCCU Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) helps facilitate the University's mission of research, teaching and service by ensuring health, safety, emergency management, risk management, and regulatory compliance. The group enables and empowers NCCU to adopt a culture of pride and professionalism in which innovation, discovery, and positive change are fully supported by safety professionals.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Environmental Health & Safety Program Coordinator supports the development, implementation, and administration of Environmental Health & Safety programs and initiatives. The position provides operational support through inspections, assessments, documentation, corrective-action management, training support, stakeholder coordination, and implementation of assigned EHS activities. The position assists the University in maintaining a safe and healthy environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors while supporting compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, institutional policies, and risk-reduction objectives. Assignments may vary based on departmental priorities, operational needs, and institutional risk.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Working knowledge of environmental health and safety principles, occupational safety practices, fire and life safety concepts, regulatory compliance requirements, and risk-reduction methodologies.
- Ability to conduct Fire & Life Safety, occupational safety, environmental health and safety, regulatory-compliance, or closely related inspections, assessments, walkthroughs, investigations, and field evaluations; identify hazards and deficiencies; and assist with corrective-action implementation and follow-up.
- Ability to maintain accurate records, prepare reports, document findings, and utilize electronic systems for documentation, tracking, and compliance management.
- Ability to support implementation of multiple EHS programs and initiatives while managing changing priorities and operational demands.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff, contractors, vendors, and other stakeholders regarding safety, compliance, and risk-reduction activities.
- Ability to deliver training, provide program support, and assist with stakeholder engagement and outreach activities.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively while exercising sound judgment and professional discretion.
- Ability to adapt to evolving departmental priorities, emerging risks, incidents, regulatory requirements, and institutional needs.
Minimum Education/Experience
- Associate degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, Fire Protection Technology, Fire Science, Emergency Services, Industrial Technology, Environmental Science, Public Safety, Risk Management, or a closely related field; and three years of progressively responsible experience related to the area of assignment.
- An associate degree in another field may be considered when accompanied by relevant safety, fire prevention, inspection, compliance, or risk-reduction certifications or training and at least three years of directly related experience.
- Applicants must have experience conducting Fire & Life Safety, occupational safety, environmental health and safety, regulatory-compliance, or closely related inspections or assessments; documenting findings; identifying and tracking deficiencies; and supporting corrective-action implementation and follow-up.
- All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
- A bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, Fire Protection Technology, Fire Science, Emergency Services, Industrial Technology, Environmental Science, Public Safety, Risk Management, or a closely related field is preferred.
- A bachelor's degree in another field may also be considered when accompanied by relevant safety, fire prevention, inspection, compliance, or risk-reduction certifications, training, and directly related experience.
- Preferred experience includes Fire & Life Safety programs, occupational safety, environmental compliance, hazard assessments, corrective-action management, facilities support, training, or related operational environments. Experience coordinating safety-related activities and working with building systems or facility operations is highly desirable.
- Experience within higher education, governmental, institutional, healthcare, industrial, construction, facilities, maintenance, or similar environments is beneficial.
Licenses or Certification required by Statute or Regulation
No licenses or certifications are required by statute or regulation.
Preferred certifications, training, or professional development may include:
- OSHA 10-Hour or OSHA 30-Hour General Industry Training
- Fire and Life Safety, fire prevention, or fire inspection-related training
- Hazard recognition, inspection, audit, or compliance-related training
- Indoor Air Quality (IAQ), moisture management, mold awareness, or building systems training
- Environmental Health and Safety certificate programs
- First Aid, CPR, or Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certifications
- Occupational safety, risk reduction, incident investigation, or workplace safety training
- Other safety, compliance, inspection, or risk-reduction related certifications and training relevant to the position

- Conducts Fire & Life Safety, occupational safety, environmental health and safety, regulatory-compliance, and related inspections, assessments, walkthroughs, audits, and field evaluations throughout University facilities and operations.
- Identifies, documents, and communicates hazards, deficiencies, unsafe conditions, compliance concerns, and opportunities for risk reduction.
- Prepares inspection reports, assessment summaries, field notes, photographic documentation, and related records.
- Enters, maintains, and updates inspection findings, deficiencies, recommendations, and corrective actions within departmental systems and records.
- Conducts follow-up inspections and assessments to verify corrective-action completion and document closure or identify additional actions needed.
