Quality Engineer I

Our team is expanding, and we are currently hiring a Quality Engineer I supports product and process quality for semiconductor equipment manufacturing. This role works with manufacturing, supplier quality, engineering, and operations teams to monitor quality performance, investigate nonconformances, drive corrective actions, and help ensure products meet internal specifications and customer requirements. This role will contribute to the effective management of the environmental, health and safety program at Axcelis' semiconductor equipment manufacturing facility in Beverly MA

Responsibilities:

  • Support product and in-process quality activities for semiconductor equipment assemblies, subassemblies, and components.
  • Review nonconforming material, document defects clearly, and help drive containment, root cause investigation, and corrective actions.
  • Partner with manufacturing and engineering teams in CI (Continual Improvement) activities to improve process capability, reduce defects, and increase first-pass yield.
  • Analyze quality data and trends using basic statistical tools and prepare clear summaries for team review.
  • Assist with development and maintenance of inspection plans, work instructions, control plans, and standard quality documentation.
  • Participate in audits, layer process checks, and verification activities to confirm compliance with internal standards and customer requirements.
  • Support new product introduction and engineering change implementation by helping evaluate manufacturability, quality risks, and inspection requirements.
  • Collaborate with supplier quality and procurement teams to address component quality issues and support supplier corrective actions when needed.
  • Demonstrate a Quality mindset in daily work and interactions and actively participate in building a strong quality culture throughout Operations.
  • Participate in and promote use of problem-solving tools such as 8D, 5 Whys, Pareto analysis, SPC, and CAPA methods as appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate quality records and help ensure traceability, configuration control, and documentation accuracy.
  • May include travel, approximately 5-10%

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, industrial engineering, electrical engineering, materials science, or a related technical discipline.
  • 0-2 years of experience in manufacturing, quality, supplier quality, or process engineering internships, co-ops, or full-time roles.
  • Basic understanding of quality systems, inspection methods, and CAPA (Corrective Action Preventive Action) processes.
  • Exposure to semiconductor, electronics, precision machining, electromechanical assembly, or capital equipment manufacturing.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings, bills of material, and technical specifications.
  • Familiarity with measurement tools and inspection equipment such as calipers, micrometers, gauges.
  • Ability to follow cleanroom, ESD, contamination control, and safety requirements applicable to semiconductor equipment manufacturing
  • Familiar with ERP and quality systems software used for nonconformance, CAPA, and document control activities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of and practical experience in Lean, 5S, and Statistical Process Control (SPC)
  • Working knowledge of problem solving methods and tools, 8D, pareto, histogram, fishbone, 5-whys.

U.S. BASE SALARY RANGE

$62,210.59 - $93,315.88

This base salary range reflects the typical compensation for this role across U.S. locations.

Our salary ranges are determined by role and level; individual pay is determined based on

multiple factors, including job-related skills, experience, relevant education or training, work

location, and internal equity. The range provides the opportunity for growth and progression as

you develop within the role.

Base pay is one part of our U.S. total compensation package which includes eligibility in the

Axcelis Team Incentive bonus plan, and comprehensive benefits package (for regular

employees working 20+ hours a week).
