Job Summary

Our client is seeking an experienced and motivated Lead Cabling Technician to join its growing telecommunications and network infrastructure team. This field-based position offers the opportunity to lead complex structured cabling and fiber optic installation projects across a variety of commercial, industrial, and data center environments.

The Lead Cabling Technician will oversee installation crews, coordinate project activities, and perform hands-on installation, testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance of structured cabling, fiber optic systems, and low-voltage communication networks. The successful candidate will possess strong technical expertise in telecommunications infrastructure, network cabling, fiber optic systems, and industry-standard testing procedures while ensuring all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with NEC standards.

This role is ideal for a skilled telecommunications professional who enjoys leading teams, solving technical challenges, and delivering high-quality connectivity solutions for enterprise clients.

Key Responsibilities

Structured Cabling Installation

  • Lead installation of structured cabling systems for commercial and industrial facilities.

  • Install, terminate, label, and test Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A, and fiber optic cabling.

  • Install backbone and horizontal cabling systems.

  • Install telecommunications rooms, equipment racks, patch panels, cable trays, ladder racks, and cable management systems.

  • Ensure all installations comply with customer specifications and industry standards.

Fiber Optic Installation & Testing

  • Perform single-mode and multi-mode fiber optic splicing.

  • Terminate and certify fiber optic cabling.

  • Conduct fiber optic testing using OTDRs, power meters, and certification equipment.

  • Troubleshoot fiber optic connectivity issues.

  • Maintain proper documentation of fiber test results.

Network Infrastructure

  • Install and troubleshoot Ethernet network infrastructure.

  • Support LAN and WAN network installations.

  • Install, configure, and troubleshoot:

    • Cisco Routers

    • Cisco Switches

    • Juniper Networking Equipment

    • VoIP Systems

    • Avaya Communication Systems

  • Assist with network equipment installation and commissioning.

Telecommunications Systems

  • Install and maintain low-voltage communication systems.

  • Perform cable termination and cross-connect installation.

  • Troubleshoot telecommunications equipment and structured wiring systems.

  • Install and support voice and data communication systems.

  • Verify system performance using diagnostic equipment.

Testing & Troubleshooting

  • Utilize diagnostic tools including:

    • Fiber Testers

    • OTDR

    • RF Test Equipment

    • Network Cable Testers

    • Ohmmeters

    • Tone Generators

    • Multimeters

  • Diagnose network failures and communication issues.

  • Repair damaged cabling and telecommunications equipment.

  • Perform certification testing and quality assurance inspections.

Leadership & Project Coordination

  • Lead field installation crews on multiple concurrent projects.

  • Assign daily work activities and monitor project progress.

  • Coordinate project schedules with project managers and customers.

  • Ensure projects are completed safely, on schedule, and within quality standards.

  • Mentor junior technicians and installers.

  • Conduct quality inspections throughout project execution.

Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with National Electrical Code (NEC) standards.

  • Follow OSHA safety requirements and company safety procedures.

  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment.

  • Properly utilize PPE and safe work practices.

  • Promote a culture of workplace safety.

Required Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a Lead Cabling Technician, Structured Cabling Technician, Telecommunications Technician, or Network Cabling Technician.

  • Experience leading installation crews and field projects.

  • Strong knowledge of structured cabling systems.

  • Experience with fiber optic splicing and certification.

  • Experience troubleshooting telecommunications and networking systems.

  • Strong understanding of Ethernet networking.

  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.

  • Ability to read engineering drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, and network layouts.

  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities.

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.

  • Ability to travel to customer locations daily.
