Job description

Description The Cordova Recreation & Park District (District) is seeking a self-driven and proactive candidate to join the team at the Neil Orchard Senior Activities Center (NOSAC) in the role of Park Maintenance Worker I. The ideal candidate takes great pride in serving the needs of the participants at the Neil Orchard Senior Activities Center and demonstrates flexibility to assist the entire team as needs arise throughout the facility. In this particular role, the Park Maintenance Worker I performs a varied set of tasks such a general facility maintenance, janitorial duties, landscaping, gardening, and assisting with events and in the commercial kitchen.

This is a full-time entry level position with a comprehensive benefits package that includes fully paid medical, dental, and vision for the employee and all eligible dependents along with participation in the CalPERS Retirement System. WORK SCHEDULE REQUIREMENT: Full-time Monday through Friday, with the ability to occasionally work weekends for community events and weekend facility rentals as needed. First-round interviews to tentatively take place the week of June 22, 2026.

Summary Description Under general supervision of assigned supervisory staff, performs a variety of skilled and specialized work in the maintenance and operation of District parks and facilities; assists in the direction, supervision, and work of park maintenance activities; maintains and operates a variety of hand and power tools and equipment; and performs a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility. Distinguishing Characteristics This is the journey level class within the Park Maintenance Worker series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Park Maintenance Worker II level by the latter's responsibility for performing the most difficult and responsible types of duties assigned to classes within this series.

Who We Are Established in 1958, Cordova Recreation & Park District is an independent special district governed by an elected Board of Directors. We provide quality recreational programs, parks and services for our diverse and growing region. We currently operate over 50 parks and facilities across more than 600 acres of urban and open space.

We also operate Cordova Golf Course which is a full-service 18-Hole course with a lighted driving range, pro-shop and lessons from PGA professionals. We host dozens of events throughout the year and provide athletic, educational and creative outlets for children and adults of all ages. Who We Serve We proudly serve communities within Sacramento County including the City of Rancho Cordova and the communities of Gold River, Larchmont, Mather, Riviera East, Rosemont and additional unincorporated portions of Sacramento County.

Essential Functions The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices. Facility Maintenance: Performs skilled, semi-skilled, and manual labor in carpentry, electrical, masonry, mechanical, painting, custodial, pest control, and other trades as required.

Assists in the planning and coordination of maintenance and facility operations. Cleans exterior grounds of the building, empty trash receptables, and removes litter and debris. Responsible for routine inspection of District facilities and execution of required maintenance and repairs.

Safely cleans and disposes of biohazard materials, including bodily fluids, in accordance with established safety and sanitation guidelines. Landscaping/Grounds Maintenance: Performs skilled, semi-skilled, and manual labor in landscaping, irrigation, and horticulture. Operates mowers, edgers, rototillers, weed eaters, hand and power tools, and related park maintenance machinery and equipment.

Plants, mows, weeds, and trims turf areas. Installs, repairs, and adjusts sprinkler heads and repairs broken irrigation lines. Trims and prunes trees and shrubs.

Performs garden maintenance, including preparing garden boxes each season, planting vegetables, weeding, maintaining drip irrigation systems, and regular watering. Events and Food Services: Communicates with renters and patrons regarding facility use; oversees use of recreational equipment and facilities. Safely utilizes equipment such as TV, DVD/VCR, movie projectors, kilns, exercise equipment as necessary for recreation programming.

Sets up and arranges chairs, tables, and other furniture according to arrangement charts, plans, or verbal directions; assists with event room setup and service. Assists with kitchen operations, including dishwashing, food preparation, and harvesting vegetables from the garden. Maintains kitchen cleanliness and ensures compliance with County Environmental Health Department standards.

Obtain and maintain a valid ServSafe Food Handlers Card. Occasionally work weekends for community events and provides coverage for weekend facility rentals as needed. General Duties: Demonstrates strong customer service and interpersonal skills during public contact during the conduct of activities.

Provides customer service support and assists the general public at the front counter as needed. Supervises employees, including planning, assigning, and coordinating the work of part-time staff and volunteer crews engaged in gardening, maintenance, construction, and repair work. Maintains written records and reports.

Operates and maintains all equipment required to perform work, including lubricating, changing oil and filters, and cleaning and replacing parts. Performs related and incidental duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.

Knowledge of: Operations, services, and activities of a park maintenance program. Methods, techniques, materials and equipment used in the construction, maintenance and repair of District parks and facilities. Materials, methods, terminology, and tools used in the maintenance, repair, and construction of building structures and systems including those used in performing rough and finished carpentry, plumbing, electrical, remodeling, painting, and a variety of other craft work.

Operational characteristics of tools and equipment used in assigned maintenance activities. Proper procedures used in the maintenance and repair of hand and power tools. Principles and practices of propagating and maintaining trees, shrubs, flowers and turf.

Basic irrigation system installation, maintenance and repair. Tools, techniques and procedures of tree trimming. Practices and procedures used in weed abatement.

Occupational hazards and standard safety procedures. Basic mathematics. Principles of lead supervision.

Basic principles and practices of record keeping. Pertinent federal, state, and local codes, laws, and regulations. Ability to: Participate in performing semi-skilled and skilled park and/or facilities maintenance work.

Safely and effectively operate a variety of maintenance tools and equipment related to area of assignment. Perform maintenance, repair and installation of facilities, office furniture and lighting fixtures. Plant, propagate and maintain trees, shrubs, flowers and turf.

Perform heavy manual labor. Maintain and repair irrigation systems and related components. Maintain accurate records and produce reports and documentation.

Plan, organize, train, direct and evaluate the work of part-time Park Maintenance Worker Aides. Keep workers on task and ensure daily tasks are completed. Work independently in the absence of supervision.

Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Read, write and speak English at a level to satisfactorily perform the work. Respond to public inquiries and requests.

Estimate necessary materials and equipment to complete assignments. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Obtain and maintain a valid ServSafe Food Handlers Card. Drive a vehicle to perform assigned work as needed. Education and Experience Guidelines - Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade and one year of experience in the maintenance and repair of parks and facilities. Experience in food service and events desirable. License or Certificate: Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license.

Possession of a ServSafe Food Handlers Card or obtain one within ninety (90) days of employment at the District's expense. Additional Requirements: Applicants must be at least eighteen (18) years of age prior to appointment due to the hazards of the job, as defined by the Fair Labor Standards Act. Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) background checks.

A clear tuberculosis screening is required. Required to take and pass a physical examination and drug screening.
