ASSISTANT DIRECTOR-STUDENT MEDIA
The University of Alabama at Birmingham
General Responsibilities :
To provide direct leadership and administration to Student Media including the Kaleidoscope student news outlet, Aura literary magazine, and UABtv entertainment network. To train, onboard, and implement policies for student employees in order to ensure a high level of efficiency and offer professional development for students. To design and coordinate training curriculum on multimedia storytelling. To educate students on the rules and best practices of mass media and new media. To act as a liaison with printing, vendors, and local media.
This position may also supervise the department's creative agency depending on skillset.
Key Duties & Responsibilities :
1. Designs and implements a comprehensive multimedia training curriculum for student volunteers across print, broadcast, and digital media.
2. Provides direct, high-quality advising support to UABtv. Provides advising support on digital production to the Kaleidoscope and Aura Literary Arts Review as needed.
3. Manages all equipment inventory and ensures compliance with departmental and University equipment use policies.
4. Assists director in visioning and strategic planning for the department, including developing student-learning outcomes, and oversees ongoing, comprehensive assessment of Student Media and all related programming, education, and activities.
5. Monitors trends in media and remains current on best practices for convergent media and social media.
6. Recruits, hires, and supervises the Student Production Manager, Social Media Manager, DJ staff, and other student staff as needed.
7. Monitors and reports organization progress to the Director.
8. Develops and maintains positive relationships with local media outlets and departmental service providers.
9. Assists in collecting, analyzing, and reporting information to be used for university-level reports or briefings.
10. Assists in preparing and editing various annual and periodic reports and proposals as well as relevant sections of various institutional, division, and department publications.
11. Provides relative data in reference to Student Life on campus that can be used for assessment and decision-making.
12. Performs other duties as assigned.
Salary Pay Range : $48,000 - $50,000
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements :
Bachelor's degree in Communications or a related field and three (3) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities :
• Adobe Creative Cloud, Adobe Audition, and Adobe Final Cut Pro
• Copy editing, audio editing, videography, photography, copy writing, and event planning
• Advising, supervision, communication, leadership skills and styles, curriculum development, and collaboration
