Instructional Specialist - Automotive & Diesel Technology
New River Community and Technical College
Advanced Technology Center | Ghent, WV
Shape the Future of Automotive & Diesel Education
New River Community and Technical College is seeking a passionate, industry-experienced Instructional Specialist to educate and prepare the next generation of automotive and diesel technicians. This role is ideal for a professional who thrives in a hands-on learning environment and is excited to help expand our program into electric and hybrid vehicle (EV/Hybrid) education, ultimately leading the development of a new degree pathway.
You'll join a collaborative faculty team dedicated to workforce readiness, innovation, and student success-while making a lasting impact on the region we serve.
What You'll Do
Teaching & Student Success
  • Teach a full range of automotive and diesel technology courses, including engine performance, transmissions, drivetrains, braking systems, and emerging EV/Hybrid technologies
  • Deliver engaging instruction through hands-on labs, demonstrations, and classroom learning
  • Evaluate student progress, provide mentoring, and support academic and career success
  • Serve as an academic advisor when assigned

Curriculum Leadership
  • Develop, revise, and assess curricula aligned with industry standards and workforce needs
  • Lead efforts to expand EV/Hybrid automotive education
  • Maintain NATEF/ASE-aligned accreditation standards
  • Ensure labs and equipment remain current, safe, and industry-relevant

Program & Community Engagement
  • Collaborate with faculty, department leadership, and advisory boards
  • Build strong relationships with local dealerships, repair facilities, and industry partners
  • Assist with program recruitment, outreach, and marketing
  • Participate in college committees, meetings, and commencement exercises

What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications
  • Associate degree (or equivalent) in automotive or diesel technology
  • Five (5) years of full-time industry experience in automotive and/or diesel technology
  • Current ASE certification in at least three (3) areas
  • Valid driver's license
  • Strong instructional, communication, and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications
  • ASE Master Diesel Technician
  • Ten (10) years of diesel industry experience
  • Teaching experience, preferably at the community college level
  • Experience with electric and hybrid vehicle technologies

  • Expertise in diagnosing and repairing engines, transmissions, drivetrains, and brake systems
  • Ability to teach diverse learners using multiple instructional methods
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and D2L Brightspace
