Position Overview

As a Mechanical Designer, you'll work under the direction of a Mechanical Engineer and Project Manager to design HVAC and mechanical systems that meet high standards of performance, efficiency, and constructability.

This role blends technical design, fieldwork, and cross-discipline collaboration. As you grow, you'll assume greater independence, lead coordination efforts, mentor junior staff, and handle larger project scopes.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Apply mechanical and thermodynamic principles to design and specify HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical systems.

  • Perform HVAC load estimation, energy usage calculations, and energy code compliance documentation.

  • Coordinate with architects, structural, electrical, and client teams to integrate all MEPT elements.

  • Design systems including:

    • Ductwork layout, sizing, routing

    • Air distribution devices (grilles, diffusers, registers)

    • Central & terminal HVAC units (AHUs, FCUs, VAV boxes, etc.)

    • Hydronic piping (sizing, routing, pumps)

    • Central plant equipment (boilers, chillers, pumps, heat exchangers)

    • Control/automation systems (sequences, control strategies, integration)

  • Perform field site surveys to document existing conditions, measurements, and constraints.

  • Develop conceptual and construction cost estimates (materials, labor, installation).

  • Model and detail in Revit/BIM—produce and maintain drawings, views, annotations, and schedules.

  • Review vendor submittals, respond to RFIs, track changes, and support commissioning/as-built documentation.

  • Visit construction sites to observe installations and flag deviations.

  • Mentor junior designers or interns (for higher-level designers).

  • Contribute to improving internal standards, templates, and workflows.

Required skills and experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or HVAC Engineering (or related field) plus ~2 years of experience
    — OR —

  • Associate degree/technical diploma with equivalent field experience.

  • Solid understanding of thermodynamics, fluid flow, and heat transfer.

  • Proficiency in Revit (non-negotiable).

  • Familiarity with HVAC system types (VAV, DOAS, VRF, geothermal, etc.).

  • Strong collaboration, communication, and problem-solving skills.

  • Attention to detail and a willingness to grow into leadership of project scopes.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base Salary: $60,000 – $80,000 (dependent on experience & level).

  • Total Compensation: $85,000 – $110,000+ (includes benefits, bonus/profit sharing).

  • Health, dental, vision insurance packages.

  • 401(k) match, PTO, paid holidays, and flexible work arrangements.

  • Professional development support—training, certifications, LEED/ASHRAE education.

  • Mentorship from senior engineers in a collaborative, growth-minded environment.
