As of Aug 1, 2026, the average hourly pay for full time l1 visa in the United States is $34.86, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $29.09 and $37.50 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Can an L1 visa holder work part-time?

L1 visa holders are authorized to work only for the employer that sponsored their visa and in the specific role approved by USCIS. Part-time work is generally not permitted unless explicitly authorized, as the visa is tied to full-time employment with the sponsoring company. Any employment outside the approved terms can violate visa conditions and affect future immigration benefits.

What is a Full Time L1 Visa?

A Full Time L1 Visa refers to an employment-based, non-immigrant visa that allows companies to transfer qualified employees from their foreign offices to their U.S. offices on a full-time basis. The L1 visa typically applies to managers, executives (L1A), or employees with specialized knowledge (L1B). This visa is often used by multinational companies to bring key personnel to the United States for a specific period. L1 visa holders can work legally and may be eligible to apply for permanent residency while in the U.S. The visa also allows dependents to accompany the primary visa holder.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an L1 Visa employee?

To thrive as an L1 Visa employee, you typically need specialized knowledge of your company's products, services, or processes along with relevant work experience and educational qualifications. Familiarity with collaboration tools, project management systems, and any industry-specific software is often required. Strong communication, cultural adaptability, and teamwork skills help you integrate into new environments and collaborate across global teams. These skills and qualities are critical for successful knowledge transfer, smooth project execution, and effective cross-border collaboration.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in the U.S. under a Full-Time L1 Visa, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals working full-time in the U.S. on an L1 Visa often encounter challenges such as adapting to a new corporate culture, managing time zone differences with their home country, and navigating U.S. workplace regulations. Building strong communication channels with both local and international teams can help ease the transition. Additionally, proactively seeking guidance from HR and participating in orientation programs can provide valuable support and resources to overcome these initial hurdles.

Is L1A better than H1B?

L1A visas are designed for intracompany transferees in managerial or executive roles, offering longer maximum stay and potential for permanent residency, while H1B visas are for specialized skilled workers with a cap on annual issuance. The choice depends on the job role, career goals, and eligibility; L1A may be better for executives seeking long-term residence, whereas H1B is common for specialized professionals. Both require employer sponsorship and have different application processes and restrictions.

Are L-1 visas at risk with Trump?

L-1 visas, used for intracompany transferees including those in managerial or specialized knowledge roles, have faced increased scrutiny during different administrations, including Trump's. However, the visa program continued with policy adjustments, and the overall risk depends on current immigration policies and enforcement priorities, which can change over time. Staying informed about policy updates and working with legal experts can help mitigate risks for L-1 visa holders.

How much time can you work on a L1 visa?

A full-time L1 visa holder can generally work for the sponsoring employer for up to seven years for L1A managers and executives, and up to five years for L1B specialized knowledge employees. Extensions may be possible if the individual continues to meet visa requirements and the employer maintains the petition. The visa is tied to employment with the sponsoring company and does not typically allow for work outside of that employment without additional authorization.
