Horticulturist, I

Requires little to no related experience. This is an Entry-Level position
Horticulturist, II
Perform advanced gardening/horticultural tasks such as planting, pruning, mulching, and fertilizing to maintain plant health and aesthetic quality. Independently irrigate planting areas and maintain greenhouses, cultivating and preparing seedlings for outdoor growth. Identify plant species, removing invasive or toxic varieties, and participate in landscape design to optimize plant placement and growth potential. Collaborate with team members to execute seasonal maintenance plans. Contribute to landscape upkeep and participate in seasonal maintenance tasks, including but not limited to shoveling and snow removal. Closely adhere to industry and university best practices and safety requirements. A current driver's license may be required.
Requires at least 1 year of related experience. This is an Intermediate Level position
Horticulturist, III
Plan and implement landscape/horticulture maintenance programs, including pruning, fertilizing, pest and disease control, watering, and mulching. Maintain assigned outdoor garden areas to meet high aesthetic and horticultural standards. Identify and address plant health concerns, ensure the sustainability of living plant collections, and participate in the movement of plants to maximize growth potential. Assist in budget management and make recommendations for materials and equipment purchases. Share horticultural knowledge with team members and the public, providing technical expertise during projects. Contribute to landscape upkeep and participate in seasonal maintenance tasks, including but not limited to shoveling and snow removal. Closely adhere to industry and university best practices and safety requirements. A current driver's license may be required.
Requires 3+ years of related experience. This is a Skilled Level position
Minimum Qualifications

EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).

Department may hire employee at one of the following job levels:

Horticulturists, I: Requires little to no related experience.

Horticulturists, II: Requires at least 1 year of related experience.

Horticulturists, III: Requires 3+ years of related experience.

Preferences

This position is primarily for the following Horticulturist levels and does not require a degree:
Horticulturist I- entry level, maintenance (mow, whip, trash, leaf pickup etc.)
Horticulturist II- everything a gardener is responsible for but has more than 2 years' experience. Knows difference between plant types, has a spray license. Can specialize providing skills for arborist, greenhouse etc. May manage gardeners.
Horticulturist III- Certification is preferable and/or should be able to obtain with years' experience and knowledge of the green industry.
